DEVICE'FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,789, dated April 28, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY B. K'EIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lancaster, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Mechanism for Converting an Oscillating into a Rotary Motion, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of mechanism, described and claimed hereinafter, for converting an oscillating into a rotary motion.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, of the device which forms the subject of my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse sectionon the line 1 2, Fig. 1 Fig. 3, a face View of the carrier and parts, and Fig. 4 detached views of the device.
' On a shaft, B, is a pulley, D, to which rotary motion has to be imparted by the oscillation of a hub or carrier, A, loose on the same shaft. It is immateriatto my invention what appliances are used to turn this carrier first in one direction and then in the other. A flanged disk, I, loose on the shaft B, is sit uated between the hub of the pulley D and the carrier A, and to the latter are secured pins 121., preferably three in number, the pins being arranged at equal distances radially from the axis of the shaft, and at equal distances apart circumferentially. Each pin m passes through a segmental elongated slot, b, in the disk I, and to each pin is connected the inner end of an arm, \V, and to the outer end of each arm is secured a clutch-shoe, 3 adapted to" the periphery of the pulley D. The flange p of the disk I is recessed at three points, these recesses serving as guides for the arms W, which are retained in place laterally in one direction by the said disk I, and in the other direction by the edge of the pulley D. The outward movement of the arms WV is limited by a projection, to, on each arm, the said projections being in contact with the flange of the disk I when the clutch'shoes are at their farthest distance from the periphery of the pulley, as shown in Fig. 2, and this will be the position of the shoes when the carrier is turned in the direction of the arrow 1 in said figure. When the carrier, however, is turned in a contrary direction, the clutch-shoes will be instantly brought into such close frictional contact with the periphery of the pulley D that the latter will turn with the carrier, and on again turning the latter in the direction of the arrow the pulley will be free from the con- 1 trol of the shoes, but owing to the impetus received during the depression of the lever will continue to revolve. I prefer to clothe the periphery of the pulley D with a strip, 3 of leather or other material, which will insure a.
firm hold of the pulley by the clutch-shoes, and in order to secure this strip I make a narrow gap, t, in the pulley, pass both ends of the strip through the gap, and secure them to an internally-projecting flange, o, bya bolt, n.
I prefer to make the clutching-shoe in the manner shown in Fig. 4, where it will be ob served that a cavity, 6, is formed in each arm W by a flange, f, for the reception of a number of strips, h, of leather, rawhide, or other equivalent material, which are secured to the said cavity by bolts passing through the arm, the strips being punched or recessed at t for the passage of the stems of these bolts.
The pulley D may be part of a larger pulley, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) this larger pulley being used for driving any mechanisin. In this case the duplex pulley might be loose, and the shaft 13 or a driving-pulley may be secured to the shaft independently of the pulley D, in which case the latter will be secured to the shaft, which will be adapted to rotate in fixed bearings.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of a shaft, B, and pulley D thereon, a carrier, A, and appliances for oscillating the same on the shaft, with guided arms W, connected at their inner ends to the carrier, and furnished at. their outer ends with clutchshoes adapted to the said pulley. substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the shaft ]3, carrier A, arms WV, pulley D, and disk I, with its recessed flange 19, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the pulley D, the gap t therein, and the internal flange, o, with a strap, y, applied to the periphery of the pulley, and secured at its ends to the flange, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the arm IV and the cavity 6 therein, with the strips h, fitted in the cavity and secured to the arm, substantially as described.
