STRAW-CUTTER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 81,685, dated March 5, 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, U. T. STUART and C. E. STEWART, of Fayette county, in the State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in an Oat-Cutter or Machine for Cutting Rough Feed for Stock; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists of a cast, or wrought iron wheel, B. B. B, having either a single blade across the diameter of the wheel, or two blades meeting at thecen ter, fastened to the rim'or wheel by a bolt and tap at each end, L. L. and hole in the center of the blade, through which a ca st, or wrought iron axle passes M The blade has an edge on each end, A. A. The edges are reversed. The blade is held in position on the axle by two washers, N. one washer being stationary, the other movable, fastened together by two bolts and taps 0. There are two breast plates, one of which is stationary, C. The other D. D. is moved back and forth by a spring E, as the blades pass between.

The axle of the wheel rests on a frame, P.

supported on two legs Q. Q. A box into which the feed is put R. having one leg, S, at one end of the box, the other end fastened to the frame P. supporting the machinery; The wheel and blade are covered with a box T. on a hinge U. and is fastened at the other end by a button V. which serves as a breast, against which the feed rests, while the ma chine is operating.

The machine feeds itself, by means of a spring, F, a lever G., a rope H. and a plunger 1, which forces the feed to the breast. The plunger is drawn back with the hand, the feed put in the box R. and the lid J. J J. is shut down. The machine is then ready for operating. 4
