' J. MOCORMIOK.
' SASH HOLDER. No. 316,282. Patented Apr. 21, 1885.
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE;
JAMES MCCORMICK, OF PRINCETON, INDIANA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.316,282, dated April 21, 1885.
Application filed November 28, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MoOoRMIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-holders, and is designed to produce a device for securely fastening a window-sash at any desired height equally well in wet or dry weather.
In the description below reference is bad to the annexed drawings, showing in Figure 1 a top view with a portion of the casing broken away, and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the same.-
A designates a casing having its interior at B larger than at O, and being provided with wings, D, through which fastening-screws pass, and lugs E on its under surface, which enter the woodwork of the window and relieve the screws in a measure of the strain incident to the operation of the device. The case has one end closed and the other open, and is provided near the closed end with a transverse slot, F. The side of the said slot coincident with the closed end of the case is provided with notches G, (one or more.)
Within the case is a bolt, H, having a beveled end, I, which terminates in a small shoulder, K. A handle or thumb-piece, L, projects from the bolt through the slot F, its free end being broadened and thinned or beveled from one side, so as to admit of the easy insertion of the finger under it when it is parallel with the sash.
(No model.)
The clamping-bolt M rests within thelarger 7 interior portion,B,of the case, and is provided with an enlarged bearing-face. The bolt M has an interior recess with a beveled termination corresponding to the shape of the bolt [-1, and a shoulder, N. The shell of the bolt M is perforated by a diagonal slot, 0, in which plays a pin, P, on the bolt H.
By throwing the handle from one side to the other the beveled portion of the bolt H and the pin thereon will cause the clamping-bolt to advance, the two shoulders K and N engaging and locking the device when the advancement is complete. This will hold the sash in dry weather, while the notches G will hold the handle at the proper angle to lock or fasten the sash in wet weather, the woodwork then swelling more or less.
presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MCCORMICK.
