(Cl. 292167) It has been proposed to facilitate the installation of a lock into a door by using hollow cylindrical casing parts for the latch bolt and its driving means, which casing parts are arranged at right angles to each other. But in such arrangements, the connection of the casing parts with each other in the door was not heretofore sufficiently rigid, and permitted tilting of the inner parts, so that the mechanism used was only adaptable for locks with simple driving means.
The object of the invention is to improve the known mortise locks by the combination of design features which provide thereby a very simple latch bolt lock which can be manufactured at low cost with additional safety and locking devices, and which is versatile and provides troublefree installation into a door.
These and other objects and advantages of this invenclaims.

- In FIGURES 1 to 3, the' hollow cylindrical latch bolt casing part is designated by 1, and has integral therewith f a flat housing section with opposite lateral walls 3 and 4. This sectionpasses through a hollow cylindrical casing part arranged transversely to it. The cylindrical casing part houses the rotatable drive sleeves 6 and 7.
It isalso possible to use a single coil spring which 7 would be telescopically fitted within the cylinder 1 in-' stead of the two separate springs shown.
The latch bolt 8 is connected rigidly with a fiat rod 13 on the free end of which a lever 14 is pivoted. The other end of lever 14 is pivotably connected to a pivoting arm 15, which is fastened rigidly to a rotatable shaft 16 supported in the lateral walls 3 and 4 of the reduced:
section of casing 1.
The shaft 16 is arranged preferably on the longitudinal center line of the latch bolt casing 1, and eccentrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the cylindrical casing part 5. The shaft 16 is :preferably located on the side opposite to the latch bolt 8, and carries on one end a transverse arm 17 for continuous engagement into a longitudinal slot 18 of the inner drive sleeve 6. On its other end, the'shaft 16 carries a trans verse arm 19 which can be coupled within the cylinder lock 45 supported within the outer drive sleeve 7.
The hollow cylindrical casing part 5 is provided on its two ends with an interior thread 21. The extension sleeves 23 and 24 have an outer thread 22 which engages the interior thread 21. Guide escutcheons 26and 27 have cylindrical sections 28 which are inserted in 0pposite ends of the opening 29 of door section 30. Extension sleeves 23 and 24 are inserted through the openings in the escutcheon plates 26 and 27 for threaded engagement with the cylinder member 5. Extension sleeves 23 I and 24 have shoulders 25 which are moved into engagement with escutcheon plates 26 and 27 to provide a rigid support for the entire assembly.

I j v The sleeve 41 also has'a transverse arm 48 which is in continuous engagement with the longitudinal slot 57 of the outer drive sleeve 7. a In the exterior drive sleeve 7 and its door knob 32 there is incorporated acylinder lock 45 as an additional drive means which can be rigidly connected with the transverse arm 19 of the shaft 16 by axially'shifting a sleeve-shaped coupling member 47 having an endtransverse slot 56 towards the interior of the lock assembly when the key as shown in FIGURE 12 is inserted in cylinder 45. The coupling member 47 is spring biased by spring 46 in the disengaged position. a The coupling rod .36 is provided with looking member 50, the action of which can readily .be seen from an inspection of FIGURE 8. When the door knob 31 and the sleeve 6 which is integral with locking. plate 34 is rotated it is possible to pass the locking member 56) through the opening 37 in the transverse wall 34 so that the coupling ried by flange 4% of the shiftable sleeve 41 is permitted to enter opening 43 of the pivotable lever 15 to provide a direct coupling between the pivotable member 15 and the outer driving sleeve 7 through the rotatably mounted shiftable sleeve 41 which has its outer flange 48 in engagement in slot 57 of the driving sleeve 7. Thus, when the cou- V pling rod 36 and the turn button 33 are in their outward rod 36 can be moved axially inward to press against flange 4t and cause the locking pin 42 to move into the opening 44 of the stationary lateral casing wall 4. Thislocks sleeve 41, preventing any rotary movement, and thereby also locks outer drive sleeve Z -preventing any rotational movement. Thus the latch bolt 8 can not be withdrawn from its extended position by rotation of drive sleeve 7 and its door knob 32.
However, rotation of the inner door knob 31 is possible under these circumstances, and its rotation will also turn plate 34 which in turn will release the rod 36 from its inner position by permitting the abutment member 511 to fit through the opening 37 in plate 34 so that the spring 35 can push the-button 33 and the rod 36 outward. This outward movement of the rod 36 will permitthe spring 52 to push the sleeve 41 to the left as viewed in FIGURE 1 thus withdrawi-ngwpin 42 from opening 44. Thus, it is possible by merely turning theinner door knob 31, to unlock the previously locked outer door knob by removing s pin 42 from opening 44 so that sleeve 41 is freely pivot- I able when outer drive sleeve '7 rotated.

The coupling rod 36 is held in its inward position against the pressure of spring pressing outwardly against the push button 33 by means of anabutment 5 on the coupling rod 36 which engages portion 59 of the plate 34. The operation of the latch lock is as follows:
The inner door knob 31 is mounted on the inner drive sleeve 6 which is connected to shaft 16 which is integral with the pivotable lever 15 through transverse arm 17.
When the inner door knob is turned, transverse arm 17 an arc to withdraw the latch bolt 8. The outer door knob 32 is coupled to the arm 15 through drive sleeve 7 and axially slideable sleeve 41 which is rotatably mounted on shaft 16. As shown in FIGURE 9, the flange 48, which is inserted in slot 57, is rotated with outer drive sleeve 7, thus turning drive sleeve 41 and its flange which carrie's pin 4-2. Pin 42 is engaged in opening 43 of the pivotaible lever 15, so that when sleeve 411is rotated about shaft 16,-s0iis pivotable lever 15. It should be noted that this will be effected only when the coupling rod 36 and the push button 33 are in the outer-most position. Outer drive sleeve 7 and door knob 32 are disconnected from the pivotable lever 15 when the push button 33 is pressed in ward, as can be seen in FIGURE I.
In order to move the coupling rod 36 to the right of the transverse section 34;, it is necessary to turn the door knob handle so that the section 59 as shown in'FIGURE 11C is clear of the abutment 5d, FIGURES 11A and 11B which are shown looking toward the transverse wal134 from the lateral "casing wall 3 respectively show the abutment positions with respect to section 59 when the coup ling rod 36 is inthe inward locking position and the outward unlocked position for the door knob 32.

Referring to FIGURES 9Qand 12, and in particular l to FIGURE '12, it can be seenthat it i'salso possible for the latchbolt to be unlocked by inserting a key from the -Toutside through the lock cylinder 45. While the invention has been described in connection with diiferent embodiments thereof, it will be understood that it is capable of further modifications, and this appli cation is intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of the invention following, in general, the principles of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosures as come within known or customary practice in the art to which the invention pertains, and as may be applied to the essential features hereinbef-ore set forth and fall within the scope of the invention or the limits of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A latch bolt lock assembly, comprising, a latch bolt casing, a latch bolt assembly Within said casing, an openended cylindrical casing having a transverse opening in its side wall into which a rear section of said latch bolt casing is received, so that both casings are held rigidly with respect to each other, an inner cylindrical drive sleeve rotatably supported within one end of said cylindrical casing, and an outer cylindrical drive sleeve rotatably supported within the other end of said cylindrical casing, both of said drive sleeves having a door knob on the free end thereof, a pivoting arm and connecting linkage connected to said latch bolt, a rotatable shaft which extends through said inner section of said latch bolt casing walls and is rigidly connected to said pivoting arm;
said rotatable shaft being connected with said inner drive sleeve by a transverse arm which is integral with said rotatable shaft, a spring-biased coupling and locking assembly rotatably and shiftably mounted on said rotatable shaft and a Wall of said latch bolt casing, said coupling and locking assembly being in direct continual contact with said outer drive sleeve, said coupling and locking assembly including first means engageable with said latch bolt casing Wall in one position thereof to lock said outer drive sleeve, and in another'position thereof having second means to couple both of said drive sleeves, and control means disposed within said inner drive sleeve which engages said coupling and locking assembly for axiallyrshifting said coupling and locking assembly to the locked position.

A latch bolt assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said rotatable shaft has a transversely directed radial arm integral with each end on the outside of said latch bolt casing Walls, one of said radial arms being in continuous direct connection with said inner drive sleeve, said outer drive sleeve having independent rotatable driving means, said independent driving means being adapted to engage the transverse radial arm on the other end of said rotatable drive shaft.

A latch bolt lock assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said rear section of said latch bolt casing has flat sides, and the periphery of said transverse opening of the cylindrical casing has a fiat section which engages said fiat sides to provide a rigid connection, and an extension sleeve is rigidly connected to each of said open ends of said cylindrical casing, said extension sleeves providing direct support for said drive sleeves.

A latch bolt lock assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein the inner free end of said rear section of said latch bolt casing extends through said open-end cylindrical casing, and has protrusions thereon which penetrate the wood of a door to provide an additional securing means for the latch bolt lock assembly.
5. A latch bolt lock assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said control means includes a spring-loaded push button disposed at the center of the inner door knob which has a coupling rod fixed thereto, said coupling rod being in direct engagement with said coupling and locking assembly.
6. A latch bolt lock assembly as set forth in claim 5, wherein said pivoting arm is provided with an arcuate set through which said coupling rod may pass, the length of said slot being suflicient to permit full movement of the pivoting arm without interference from the coupling rod.
wherein the coupling rod between the said push button and the coupling and locking assembly is held in an inward locking position by a transverse wall which is integral with said inner driving sleeve, said coupling rod extending through an opening in said transverse wall, and having an abutment thereon which willbe unable to pass through said opening unless said transverse wall is rotated to register the opening with said abutment.
S. A latch bolt lock assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said first and second means compnises a pin extending through a flange which is integral with a sleeve which is mounted on said rotatable shaft.

1. A LATCH BOLT LOCK ASSEMBLY, COMPRISING, A LATCH BOLT CASING, A LATCH BOLT ASSEMBLY WITHIN SAID CASING, AN OPENENDED CYLINDRICAL CASING HAVING A TRANSVERSE OPENING IN ITS SIDE WALL INTO WHICH A REAR SECTION OF SAID LATCH BOLT CASING IS RECEIVED, SO THAT BOTH CASINGS ARE HELD RIGIDLY WITH RESPECT TO EACH OTHER, AN INNER CYLINDRICAL DRIVE SLEEVE ROTATABLY SUPPORTED WITHIN ONE END OF SAID CYLINDRICAL CASING, AND AN OUTER CYLINDRICAL DRIVE SLEEVE ROTATABLY SUPPORTED WITHIN THE OTHER END OF SAID CYLINDRICAL CASING, BOTH OF SAID DRIVE SLEEVES HAVING A DOOR KNOB ON THE FREE END THEREOF, A PIVOTING ARM AND CONNECTING LINKAGE CONNECTED TO SAID LATCH BOLT, A ROTATABLE SHAFT WHICH EXTENDS THROUGH SAID INNER SECTION OF SAID LATCH BOLT CASING WALLS AND IS RIGIDLY CONNECTED TO SAID PIVOTING ARM, SAID ROTATABLE SHAFT BEING CONNECTED WITH SAID INNER DRIVE SLEEVE BY A TRANSVERSE ARM WHICH IS INTEGRAL WITH SAID ROTATABLE SHAFT, A SPRING-BIASED COUPLING AND LOCKING ASSEMBLY ROTATABLY AND SHIFTABLY MOUNTED ON SAID ROTATABLE SHAFT AND A WALL OF SAID LATCH BOLT CASING, SAID COUPLING AND LOCKING ASSEMBLY BEING IN DIRECT CONTINUAL CONTACT WITH SAID OUTER DRIVE SLEEVE, SAID COUPLING AND LOCKING ASSEMBLY INCLUDING FIRST MEANS ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID LATCH BOLT CASING WALL IN ONE POSITION THEREOF TO LOCK SAID
