SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,012, dated April 21, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN GURTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Smyth and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plaiting-Boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the ac companying drawings.

My invention relates to plaiting-boards; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character with a roller for keeping the cloth being operated upon smooth and prevent it from becoming wrinkled.

A further object of the invention is to provide a plaiting-board with adjustable pivoted spring presser arms or rods for holding the cloth being operated upon in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a plaiting-board which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.

l/Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of aplaiting-board constructed in accordance with my invention, showing both of the spring presser-arms lowered. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing both of the arms raised. Fig. .3 is a detail View of the plaiting-knife.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the board, having at its forward end, on each side thereof, a forwardly-extending arm, B. Between said arms, just in front of the board A, is journaled a roller, 0, the purpose of which is to keep the cloth being operated upon smooth andprevent it from becoming wrinkled when it is fed onto the face of the board. Upon the sides of the plaiting-board, near each end thereof, are provided a series of holes or openings, a. Upon each side of the board, near the forward end thereof, fitted in any one of the series of holes or openings a, is a staple, b. Fitted in said staples are the ends of a presserarm, D. ,Said presser consists of asingle piece or strip of stiff wire having its ends bent to form hooks c, which engage said staples, and thus pivotally. secure said presser-arm thereto. At the other end of the table is a presser-arm, E, which is somewhat similarin construction to that already described, with the exception that it is pivoted a slight distance above the table and has a Ushaped portion, at, and also has a portion, e, which lies flat upon the board. These presser-arms are connected by a series of tapes, 6, which serve to hold the ends of the presserarms in engagement with the staples, and also holding the cloth fiat and smooth upon the table or board.

In operation the spring presser-arm at the forward end of the board is raised and the cloth passed between it and the roller. Said presser-arm is then lowered and holds the cloth in position. The presserarm at the other end of the board is then raised, and the end of the cloth passed underneath the same, after which it is lowered, andthe cloth platted by means of a knife of .theconstruction shown in Fig. 3. The tapes may be tightened at any time by withdrawing the staples and moving them to the next adjacent hole in the board.

It will be seen from the above description that a plaiting-board constructed in accordance with my invention is simple, may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, and that its operation is thoroughly efficient and effective.

Having fully described my invention, WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a plaiting-board, with board A, of a roller journaled at one end thereof, and a spring presser-arm having it free portion resting on said roller.

2. The combination, with the board A, having a roller journaled at one end thereof,of spring presser-arms located one at each end of the board, and tapes connecting said arms, substantially as set forth.
