DANIEL B. PEOK, or JACKSON, MIonIoAn.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,827, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed December 21, 1883. (No model.)
To a-ZZ whom it may concern..-
Be itknown that I, DANIELE. PEOK, of J ackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Fences; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in fences, the object being to construct and brace the same, so as to'overcome the necessity of partially burying the postsin the ground, and thereby to prevent the decay of the fence; and with this end in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of partsas will be hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claims.
The accompanying drawing represents my improved fence and manner of bracing the same.
A represents the fence-posts, the lower ends of which rest on blocks of wood, stone, or other suitable foundation, to which posts are secured the rails 13. To the top of the posts A are secured the wire braces O by means of a staple, a, the braces being bent at that point in an angle extended down on either side of the posts and secured to anchors D, preferably made of iron in the shape of a washer, the brace passing through a hole formed in the center thereof. Instead of using iron anchors, stone may be used in lieu-thereofithe anchor being buried in the ground and adapted to hold the brace securely, and thereby re tain the fence in its upright position. From the post A extend the wooden auxiliary braces b,oearing against the braces O,and adapted to keep the lower ends of the posts A in position.
E represents an iron rod formed in the shape of a U, the upper ends being bent in toward each other and driven into the post, while the lower curved portion thereof extends intothe ground, and is provided with an anchor of suitable material. This device may be used to keep the post A from contact with the ground instead of the foundation, as shown, beneath the other posts.
It is evident that slight changes in the details of construction might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown, but consider myself at liberty to 5 make such slight changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a fence-post and an anchor depending from the post and embcdded in the ground, of the braces O, secured to the tops of the posts and anchored at their free ends, and the rigid braces situated I above the ground between the braces and post, and adapted to hold the lower ends of the posts against displacement, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the fence-postsprovided with depending U shaped rods, and anchors for holding the rods in position, of the braces O,secured to the posts and anchored at their free ends in the ground, and the rigid braces situated above the ground between the braces O and posts, and adapted to hold the lower ends of the posts against displacement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL B. PEOK.
W'itnesses:
ELI A. CLEMENT, GI-IAs. E. Snow.
