UNITED STATES LEVI HAAS, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
PATENT DEEICE.
RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,'771, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed May 9,' 1584. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI HAAs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Ties, of which the following is a specification, rei'erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to improvements in railroad-ties, and it consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, andY pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line a: x.
In the construction of my railroad-tie I employ a metallic rectangular casing or frame, A, having in its base or bottom part a longitudinal slot, a, through which rainwater escapes and the bed earth projects in practice, and also outwardly-projecting flanges a', which are designed conjointly to anchor the tie rigidly in position, the tie being disposed when in place partially embedded beneath the surface earth. The ends of the tie are formed sloping, as shown at a2.
The casing or frame A, the parts of which are cast integral, has a central opening, B, provided in its face, also rail-recesses C, to receive the flange of the rails, spike-openings D, and spikerecesses E.
The sleepers F,to which therails are spiked the spike-heads when driven being flush with the top of the casing or frame A-are made of solid Wooden blocks of rectangular shape, and are inserted inside of casing or frame A, the
blocks being adapted as to size to tit the interior of the casing.
. The transverse nutted bolts G, two of which are employed for securing the vertical Walls and strengthening the tie, are projected either through the vertical Walls of the casing or frame A, as shown,or, for greater security, may be projected through both the vertical Walls of the casing and the sleepers, thus holding the sleeper and casing or frame rigidly togeiher.
Thus constructed the parts are not only held firmly and securely together, but the use of the ordinary wooden sleeper is dispensed with, and a very durable and efficient tie is produced, and an economy in expenditure is effected.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A railroad-tie consisting of the casing or frame A, having slot-opening a, flanges a', central opening, B, rail-recessesC, spikeopenings D, spike-recesses E, sleepers F, and nutted bolts G, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, With the sleeper, of the covering-casting having near the ends transverse openings, with recesses crossing said openings, and a central longitudinal recess or opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In'testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEVI HAAS.
