Description
(N0 MocieL) G. W. GIFPARD & J. L. ROBERTS.
' LIPTING JACK.
' Patented. Apr. 14, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WASHINGTON GIFFARD AND JOSEPH L. ROBERTS, OF GREAT BEND, KANSAS, ASSIGNORS OF ONEHALF TO CLAYTON L. AND EDVi ARD W.
MOSES, OF SAME PLACE.
LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,611, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed March 7, 1835.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. Grrnann and J osnrn L. Ronnnrs, citizens of the United States, residing at Great Bend, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting- Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
IO Our invention relates to a lifting jack adapted especially for use as a track-raiser; and it has for its object to provide a device of the character mentioned which shall be simple in its construction, effective in its opera- 1 5 tion, and strong and durable, and one by which a load may be readily and easily raised.
With these ends in View the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described,
and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lifting-jack constructed in accordance with ourinvention. Fig. 2 isa transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 is asection on theline a; a: ofFig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all thefigures, Arepresents a supporting-frame composed of two uprights or 0 standards connected at their upper ends by a strip, a, thus forming an arch-shaped frame.
Extending upwardly from the strip a are posts I), the upper ends of which are recessed or cut away, and in bearings located in said 5 recessed ends of the post is mounted a shaft, 0, upon which is pivoted a lever, B, having a divided end between the sides of which is' journaled a bracket, 0, composed of the pivoted plates 0 G the lower plate, G having 0 an opening, d, near its lower end.
The posts of the supporting-frame are connected by a crossbar, D, provided with a hole, and an elongated opening is formed in the strip a of the frame.
5 In the openings in the post and strip a is located a rod, E, carrying a grappling device, E, at its lower end, said grappling device being of any well-known construction.
Connecting the posts of the frame A, upon (X0 model.)
one side thereof, is a strip, F, formed with an elongated slot or opening, 6.
Upon the rod E is mounted a disk, G, which has an opening orpassage to receive said rod, and is also provided with outwardly-extending lugs ff, extending from opposite sides. The lug f is adapted to engage the hole or opening in the lower end of the plate 0, and the lug f to rest or bear upon the upper edge of the strip F.
Upon the rod E, just below the disk G, is located a tripping-disk, H, which is provided with a finger or extension which projects through the elongated slot in the strip F, and which, when operated while the rod is in a raised position, lowers the same.
The operation is as follows: The frame is placed over a rail, and the grappling device at the lower end of the rod E attached thereto. The lever E is then moved up and down, which causes the disk connected therewith to intermittingly move up and down, said disk in its upward movement biting the rod and raising the same, while upon its downward movement it slides thereon, the tripping-disk H biting and holding the rod E and its load while the disk Gis making a downward movement.
To lower the red, the outer end or fingerpiece of the tripping-disk is depressed, which releases the disk from its biting action and allows the rod to be lowered.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a liftingjack, the combination, with a supportingframe, of a pivoted lever, a bracket pivoted thereto, and a disk located on said rod and connected with said bracket, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lifting-jack, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of a vertically-movable rod, a grappling device at the lower end of said rod, and means for actuating said rod, substantially as set forth.
3.1m a lifting-jack, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of a vertically-movable rod, a pivoted lever, a bracket composed of pivoted plates pivoted to said lever, a disk on said rod, said disk being connected with the pivoted bracket, substantially as set forth.
4. In a lifting-jack, the combination, with asupporting-frame, of a pivoted lever carrying a pivoted bracket, a vertically-movable rod, a disk on said rod, said disk being coning and provided with, upwardly-extending posts, of a pivoted lever carrying a pivoted bracket composed of pivoted plates, at strip, 2: F, having an elongated opening, a disk on said rod, said disk having oppositely-extending lugs and connected with the pivoted bracket, and atripping-disk having a finger-piece, substantially as set forth. 25*
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as ourown we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGIOX GIFFARD. JOSEPH L. ROBERTS.
