Description

, ffiii assea jnwng MM y A' www0/Wm Al. PHOTO-LITIO, C.. Il (OSlllIl'S PROCESS) 'proved portable cross-cut sawing machine UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
PETER FISCHER, OF FORT ADAMS, MISSISSIPPI.
CROSSCUT-SAWING IMACHINE.
Specication of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may camera:
Be it known that I, PETER FISCHER, of Fort Adams, in the county of Wilkinson and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Crosscut-Sawing Machine for Sawin-g Logs into Cord or Fire Wood; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section of the same taken in the line Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures;
This Invention relates to a new and imdesigned for sawing felled timber into cord or fire wood and also into proper sized bolts for cutting into shingles, staves, etc.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a frame which is composed of a series of horizontal bars a, connected by traverse pieces b, and supported by legs c, c', the legs c, at one side of the frame being vertical and fitted in mortises cl, in the bars a, so that the frame may be raised and lowered thereon. The legs c', at the opposite side of the frame are inclined, the bars a, which are in contact with them being recessed to receive them as shown at e, in Fig. 2. The frame A, is secured on the legs c, c, at any desired point by pins f. The lower ends of the legs c', are provided withrollers g.
On the upper art of the frame A, there is placed a sha t h. This is the driving shaft and it has a spur wheel z', on it which gears into a pinion y, 'on a shaft k, below the shaft It. The shaft k, may be provided with 31,535, date-d February 26, 1861.
a fly wheel Z, and at one end it has a crank m, attached. The crank m, has a connecting rod n, secured to it the front end of said red being attached to a bar o, the upper end of lwhich is secured by a pivot or bolt p, to the upper part of one of the legs 0. The bar 0, passes through a guide g, attached to the frame A, and to the lower end of the bar 0, 'the saw B, is attached b a pivot or bolt 71. The operation is as ollows: The frame A, is adjusted to the log to be sawed in such a way that the legs at its front end will be against the log or quite near to it and the frame is leveled by adjusting the legs c, c', so as to compensate for any unevenness of the ground, the leg c, to which the bar 0, is attached being separately adjusted higher or lower as the diameter of the log may require. The shaft h, is rotated by any convenient power and motion is communicated therefrom to the shaft It, by the gearing i, y'. The crank m, by its rotation communicates, through the medium of t-he bar 0, a reciprocating motion to the saw, B, which acts upon the log feeding itself to its work by its own gravity.
I am aware that portable reciprocating saws have been operated by means of a crank, and arranged in various ways. I do not claim broadly such device irrespective of t-he construction and arrangement herein shown and described. But i I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the saw driving gearing, bar o, and saw B, with the adjustable leg c and legs c in the manner and for the purposes herein shown and described. f
. PETER FISCHER.
