WOOD-MOLD SPECIFICATION forming part of Lette Application filed Jul To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY BAXTER and AUGUST F. ANTON, both of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in WVood-Molding Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention consists of contrivances of edge-trimmers, molding-bits, and guides in a Wood-molding machine, whereby the moldings can bedressed out of one strip at once, and also so that two strips can be dressed and four moldings made at the same time, thus greatly increasing the capacity of the machine, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a moldingmachine contrived in accordance with our invention with some parts in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
We make the cutters a of the top cutterhead,b,with double and reversed bits c,adapted to dress two moldings, d, out of one strip, 6, of a little more than double the width that is used for one molding, as these moldings are commonly made, making the middle part, c, of said bit of suitable radial dimensions to cut entirely through the strip and separate the two moldings from each other, and we arrange vertical edge-trimming cutter-heads f and g for both sides of the strip to dress both edges of the molding d, and provide center guides, t, to run in the space made between the moldings for separating them, to guide theinner edges, and hold the molding against the edge-trimmers, together with the requisite edge guides j for controlling the dressed edges h, the edge-guides j being adjustable as required for moldings of different widths. WVe employ two center guides, i, one being close to the top planer-head and between it and the edge-trimmers, and the other being located over the lower cutterhead, Z, employed for dressing the molding strips on the bottom. These guides t are supported on cross-bars m by adjusting-screwsn,

the cross-bars being mounted on standards 0 at each side of the machine. The guides j are fitted in groovesp of the planer-bed suitably for being shifted as desired for being set for moldings of different widths, and will have any approved contrivance of binding-screws q or other means for securing them. contrivance of feed-rol1ers s and edge-guide 15 will be employed as in other molding-machines, and thus it will be seen that we double the capacity of the machine for work with but very slight modification of the machine, and but little expense; and these rollers and guide we double again, and thus make a machine of quadruple the capacity of the ordinary machine by making the cutters a with two double and reversed bits,c, arranging two intermediate edge trimmers, 9, two sets of center guides, z, and edge-guides j, and also arranging another edge-guide, t, under the feed-rollers s, so that two strips, e, may be at one and the same time converted into two moldings,d,each. For this purpose,instead-of using the ordinary edge-trimmers f in the intermediate position,we prefer to employ others of smaller dimensions to occupy less space, and instead of placing them side by side we 10- cate one in advance of the other, shifting the ordinary and larger cutter-heads f to the outer edges of the strip, where there is more room for them. The outer cutter-heads, f, are to be power to the intermediate heads, g,which we provide for our purpose, we introduce a driving-pulley, t, and a belt, and for the purpose of driving both cutter-heads by the one belt we suitably locate an idler to guide the belt so as to hug the pulley w of the head 9 nearest to the driver t, more effectually than it could if running direct from the driver around said pulley. \Ve mount the spindles x of cutter heads 9 in blocks y, which will in practice be attached to the machine in any approved way for being detached when the machine is to be used for surface-planing only.
Having thus described our invention, 'what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. The molding-cutters a of the top cutterhead, b,having two double and reversed mold- The same geared as in the ordinary machine, which itis not necessary to show; but for applying the ICO
