Description

Oct. 6, 1964 S. A. SANDUSKY SEESAW WITH SPRINKLER Filed Jan. 11, 1962 INVENTOR. Jnqmzy A. Sqzvouaxr United States Patent 3,151,864 SEESAW WITH SPRINKLER Stanley A. Sandusky, 10721 Wadsworth Ava, Garfield Heights, Ohio Filed Jan. 11, 1962, Ser. No. 165,571 3 Claims. (Cl. 27256) This invention relates to improvements in a seesaw whereby the same is provided with a sprinkler or other jet means fixed to the seesaw in position to project a stream substantially vertically upward when the ends of the seesaw are at approximately the same horizontal level, whereby when the seesaw is rocked about its pivot point said sprinkler or jet means will be directed to strike a person on the seat portion of the end of the seesaw in the down position.
In the drawings FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of seesaw equipped with my invention; while FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the seesaw shown in FIG. 1.
It is well known that children love to run through a sprinkler or a jet of water particularly in warm Weather. My invention provides the novel concept of fixing a jet means near the center of a seesaw and adapted to direct a liquid stream substantially vertically upward when the ends of the seesaw are at the same horizontal level and thereafter when the seesaw is rocked about its central pivot the jet is inclined toward that end of the seesaw which is lower and obviously if the jet is long enough it will sprinkle the child sitting on the seat portion in the down position of that end of the seesaw.
While my invention may be applied to the simplest seesaw known to me, namely, a board balanced across a wooden horse with my jet means fixed to the center point of the board and directing a jet stream substantially vertically upward, I have chosen to show a preferred form in FIGS. 1 and 2. Here the seesaw comprises a frame made of hollow pipe or the like which is bowed downwardly in the center, providing a horizontal axis at its lowest point 11 about which the seesaw may be rocked when the device is resting upon the ground or other flat surface. The frame bows upwardly from the central point toward each end and is flattened at the portions indicated at 10a, to which are rigidly mounted seat portions 12. If desired, a supporting handle 13 may be positioned in front of each seat portion, that is, toward the center from each seat portion, although it will be understood that this is not absolutely necessary.
The present invention adds to this or any other suitable seesaw a liquid jet device 14 which is here shown as a hollow pipe threaded at one end for the attachment of a hose 15 or other source of liquid. The pipe is per- 3,151,864 Patented Oct. 6, 1964 forated with a number of small openings 14a adapted to direct jets of water generally vertically upward as indicated in FIG. 1 and by the arrow in FIG. 2. It will be understood that the pipe 14 is rigidly fastened to the frame 10 near the points 11 so that the pipe 14 is rocked slightly as the seesaw is operated by persons sitting on the seats 12.
The operation of my improved device should now be apparent. With the hose or other source attached to the pipe 14 and turned on, a jet or series of jets will be directed substantially vertically upward While the seats 12. occupy the same general horizontal level. Persons sitting on the seats 11 may rock the seesaw in the usual fashion and obviously when one of the seats is in the down position, the jets coming out of the openings 14a will be inclined toward that end and the jet of water if of sufiicient length will then fall upon the person sitting in that seat in the lower position. This gives great delight to children utilizing my improved device.
What is claimed is:
l. A seesaw comprising a relatively rigid frame having its lowest point near the center and bowed upwardly therefrom toward each end and provided with a seat portion at each end, whereby said end seat portions are adapted to move up and down as said seesaw is rocked about said lowest portion, and a liquid jet device directed generally upward and mounted to rock with said seesaw, whereby said jet will be directed by said rocking toward that end portion which is lower.
2. A seesaw as defined in claim 1, wherein said jet device comprises a pipe fixed to said seesaw near its center and having a plurality of jet openings arranged to direct fluid leaving said pipe under pressure in a generally vertical direction when the opposite ends of said seesaw are at approximately the same horizontal level.
3. In a seesaw comprising a relatively rigid frame having its lowest point near the center and bowed upwardly therefrom toward each end and provided with a seat portion at each end, the improvement comprising a jet means fixed relative to said seesaw near the center thereof with said jet means positioned to project a stream of water substantially vertically upward when the ends of said seesaw are at approximately the same horizontal level, whereby when said seesaw is rocked about said lowest point said stream will be directed to strike a person on the seat portion which is in down position.
