UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS T. SAVAGE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,480, dated February 19, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS T. SAVAGE, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Burning Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification A, represents the external casing of the stove which is made of sheet iron or any other suitable material. IVithin the casing A, is a base burning lire chamber B, which is made in any of the known ways. This chamber is provided with a damper C, which when open creates a direct draft to the smoke pipe. Vhen this damper is closed and the opening in the top of the chamber through which fuel is introduced into it is closed the draft is indirect as will be set forth. The base burning fire chamber is situated in the center of the case A, and has four flues around it-one von the backone on the front and one on each of the two sides. These iues are separated from each other by partit-ions. The front flue is separated from the two side flues by means of two partitions which extend from the bottom of the stove to within a short distance from its to-p as from e to e,Fig. 3,-a sufficient opening being left above the partitions for the products of combustion to pass over into the side flues.
The partitions which separate the side from the back flue extend from the top of the stove to near its bottoni as from oo to oo, Fig. 2,-openings being left between the ends of the partitions a', oo', and the bottom of the stove for the products of combustion to pass under. Then a lire is made in this stove and the base burning chamber closed the products of combustion pass through the grating seen Figs. l and 3, and passing up the front flue to near its top then through the side flues to near their bottoms and then up the back flue, pass out at the smoke pipe in the usual way. The draft from the chamber B, is thus very indirect and an extremely eflicient stove is made in a very cheap and simple manner.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment of the base burning` chamber B, external case A, and partitions extending from oo to oc and from e to e, arranged as represented, whereby an indirect draft is produced around the front the sides and the back of the stove in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
