(Cl. 1329) This invention relates to protective coverings and more particularly, to a head cover which is used in connection with the treatment of human hair and especially, the streaking, tipping, frosting, or other coloring or dyeing thereof.

A primary object of this invention is to provide a head cover of absorbent material which will prevent the hair coloring or dye from reaching undesired areas of the hair.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a head cover which comfortably and conveniently fits over the hair of a person, and through which cover selected strands or groups of hair may be quickly and easily pulled in order to subject the same to the desired treatment.

A yet further aim of this invention is to provide a head cover having a plurality of substantially triangular sections, each of the sections being identical, the same being pivotally interconnected adjacent their apex portions, whereby each of the sections is relatively shiftable.

A yet further object is to provide a head cover having a plurality of head covering sections of absorbent material, one surface of each of the sections being provided with a plurality of depressed areas, and the opposite surface of each of the sections being provided with a plurality of transverse grooves.

Other objects include details of construction which will become apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing the head cover in place upon the head of a woman whose hair is to be treated;

FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the head cover showing the same in a flattened condition;

FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2;

FIG. 4 is a bottom plan view of one of the sections;

FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5--5 of FIG. 4; and

FIG. 6 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view showing the common point of interconnection of the sections.

The head cover for use in treating hair is broadly designated by the numeral 10 and constitutes a plurality of interconnected sections 12, each of said sections 12 being identical.

Sections 12 are each substantially triangular in configuration and constitute a plane isosceles triangle, the sections 12 being pivotally interconnected at their apex portions 14 by a pivot pin 16 as is best shown in FIG. 6 of the drawing.

Inasmuch as each of sections 12 is identical in construction and configuration, only one of the same Will be described hereinafter. Section 12 has a base edge 18 and a pair of side edges 20 and 22, as well as previously described apex portion 14. The section is formed of foam rubber or a similar suitable absorbent material, and the uppermost surface 24 thereof when the same is in use, is provided with a plurality of raised ribs such as 26 and 28 as best seen in FIGS. 2 and 5. Ribs 26 extend longitudinally of section 12 and ribs 28 extend transversely thereof, said ribs 26 and 28 combining to present a wafflelike pattern having a plurality of depressed areas 30, each of said depressed areas 30 in the form chosen for illustration being substantially square in configuration.

The base edge 18 and the side edges 20 and 22 of section 12 are corrugated, as best seen in FIG. 4, whereby to present a plurality of projections 32 and a number of 3,143,117 Patented Aug. 4, 1964 ice corresponding notches 34. The opposite surface 36 of section 12 and that which is in engagement with the hair when cover 10 is in use, is provided with a plurality of transverse grooves 38 which result in the formation of raised strips 40 which also extend transversely of surface 36 of section 12.

The apex portion of each section 12 is plain on both surfaces 24 and 36 thereof as is seen in FIG. 5, and said apex portion is provided with an opening 42 through which pin 16 extends to join the apex portions of sections 12 in overlying engagement as shown in FIG. 6. As is apparent, each of sections 12 may be freely shifted about pin 16 and thus, the respective sections 12 are shiftable relative to one another and may be disposed in the desired position upon the head of the person whose hair is being treated.

In operation, the cover 10 is disposed upon a womans head, for example, in the manner shown in FIG. 1 of the drawing, and cover 10 is designed to completely cover the hair of the woman being treated. When the cover 10 has been so positioned, adjacent sections 12 may be shifted so that the corrugated edges thereof mate in order to provide a complete cover for that portion of the hair under treatment and to prevent access to hair between the side edges of the adjacent sections 12.

After the cover has been positioned as above described, the hair is pulled through the sections 12 by the use of a tool which has a small hook at one end thereof and which can be pushed through the foam rubber of which the sections are made in order to grasp the desired number of strands of hair and pull them back through the appropriate section. The Waffle design on the normally outermost surface of sections 12, serves as a guide for pulling the hair through the sections and facilitates the coloring of desired portions of the hair. Thus, the same effect may be created every time through the use of the guide lines created by ribs 26 and 28 and depressed areas 30. The grooves 38 on the surface of sections 12 normally next adjacent the hair, aid in retaining the cover in place upon the head of the woman whose hair is being treated.

After the hair has been pulled through the appropriate sections as above described, and as is illustrated in FIG. 1 of the drawing, the tint or bleach may be applied thereto in desired quantities and over a desired area to create either a streaking effect, a tipping effect, or a frosting effect. Thus, if streaks are to be imparted to the hair, several strands may be pulled through on the same square or closely adjacent squares, and if a tipping eifect is to be created, alternate squares may be used. Thus, it will be appreciated that for the various designs and colorations of hair to be effected, a skilled beauty operator, through using cover 10, can create various different desired designs and as a result of the guiding means formed on one surface of the sections 12, can substantially duplicare the desired design from one treatment to the next.

After the tint or bleach has been applied to the hair as above described, and after a predetermined time has elapsed, the head cover 10 may be easily removed from the head of the Woman being treated and the hair rinsed, if such is desired. It will be appreciated that the head cover 10, being made from foam rubber or another suitable absorbent material, none of the tint or bleach which is applied to strands of hair pulled through the various sections, will reach other areas of the hair and thus the coloration may be applied to the hair in well defined areas without the danger of color being applied to undesirable areas of the hair.

Thus, head cover 10, which is simple and economical in construction, allows accurate and complete hair coloring without the possibility of the coloring material being applied in undesired areas. Through the use of the shiftable sections 12 and the guiding areas formed as a part thereof, many varied effects can be created through the use of cover 10 in the treatment of hair. While the use of cover 10 in connection with the treatment of a womans hair has been described hereinabove and shown in the drawing for purposes of illustration, it will be appreciated that cover 10 may also be used in the treatment of a mans hair if such be desired and it is intended that such use come within the scope of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

1. A head cover for use in treating hair comprising a plurality of substantially triangular sections of absorbent material; and a pivot member shiftably interconnecting said sections at the apex portions thereof, said cover adapted to be positioned upon the head of a user thereof with said pivot member at substantially the crown of the users head, said sections being of sufficient length and number to substantially define a hemispherical enclosure for the head of the user when the cover is so positioned.

A head cover for use in treating hair, comprising a plurality of substantially triangular sections of absorbent material pivotally interconnected at the apex portions thereof, the base and side edges of each of said sections being corrugated and one surface of each of said sections being provided with a plurality of raised ribs.

3. A head cover as set forth in claim 2, wherein said 4 ribs extend longitudinally and transversely of said one surface whereby to define a plurality of depressed areas.

4. A head cover as set forth in claim 2, wherein the opposite surface of each of said sections has a plurality of transverse grooves formed therein.

5. Claims (1)

1. A HEAD COVER FOR USE IN TREATING HAIR COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF SUBSTANTIALLY TRIANGULAR SECTIONS OF ABSORBENT MATERIAL; AND A PIVOT MEMBER SHIFTABLY INTERCONNECTING SAID SECTIONS AT THE APEX PORTIONS THEREOF, SAID COVER ADAPTED TO BE POSITIONED UPON THE HEAD OF A USER THEREOF WITH SAID PIVOT MEMBER AT SUBSTANTIALLY THE CROWN OF THE USER''S HEAD, SAID SECTIONS BEING OF SUFFICIENT LENGTH AND
