Be it known that I, ELTHU B. HAYEs, of Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented au Improvement in Ticket- Punches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying draw ings, is a specification, like letters on the draw ings representing like parts.

In this myilnproved ticket-punch one of the jaws is provided with a disk or die plate, which may be rotated thereon and be retained or locked in given positions therewith, the said die-plate being provided with two male dies of different for1n,and preferably secured to the plate at opposite sides of its center or axis, while to the other jaw is retained a pivoted die-plate having two female dies of different form, but corresponding in shape to the male die. The purpose of such construction is to enable the die-plates t-o be moved on their axis to bring the desired male and its corresponding female die to the outer portion of the jaws for use in punching tickets, whereby a die of one form may be used to punch tickets during an outward trip, for instance, while, after a manipulation of the die-plates, the other die, of different form, may be employed on the return trip. Further, the jaw having the plate with female dies is slotted in the line of the outermost female die, and is provided at its outer or under side with a receptacle to receive the clippings of the tickets. Further, in my invention the male dies are set at an angle other than a right angle to its jaw or to the plane of movement of4 its die-plate, so that when the jaws are brought together the male die,which for the time being is brought into use for punching, enters the female die while perpendicular thereto.

The inventionis more fully set forth in the following description, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure l shows a ticketpnnch embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof, with the levers or handles broken away. Fig. 3 shows the male die-plate in elevation andin plan, and Fig. 4 shows the female die-plate. c

The jaws A B are pivoted at c and provided with the handles a b, the spring at, to throw the jaws apart, and the usual spring, a3, to strip l the ticket or other thing punched from the male die.

The upper jaw, A, is recessed on its under or inner surface to receive the disk or die-plate c, while the pivot or stud c of said die-plate passes through the jaw A and is retained in place by` means of a pin, c?, passing transversely through said jaw so as to enter the annular groove c3 in the stud, whereby the dieplate is capable of being'moved on its stud while being securely retained in said jaw. A catch, d, is pivoted in the end of the jaw A. and actuated in one direct-ion by the coiled spring d', arranged in the socket D at the end ot' the jaw A, as shown. The toe of the springactuated catch d projects into one of the two notches e, cut in opposite sides of t-he die-plate c, to lock the said die-plate toits jaw in one of two positions, so that either the male die 2 or the male die 3, of different form than that of die 2, may be retained in position near the outer end ot' the jaw, as desired. The male dies 2 and 3 are set in the die-plate c, so as to diverge from each other or project in opposite directions from the die-plate, as clearly shown, whereby the operative die for the time being. as 2, enters the corresponding female die at a perpendicular thereto when the jaws are moved toward each other.

llhe lowerjaw, B, is recessed and provided with a die-plate, g, having a pivot-stud, g', retained in the jaw by the pin g2, passing transversely through said jaw, so as to enter the aunular groove g3 in said stud g. The die-plate g is provided with two female dies, 4 and 5, respectively corresponding in shape to the male dies 2 and 3, to receive the same,while the said die-plate g is further provided with notches f onopposite sides thereof. The head of the bolt h engages the notches f one at a time to lock the lower die-plate, g, in one of two positions to the jaw and retain the desired female die at the outer partof the jaw B,the said bolt passing through the jaw and being provided -with a nut, h', and coiled spring ht', as shown.

The nut projects from the enlargement or extension a: of the lower jaw, to permit the bolt to be forced partially through said jaw against the tension ofthe spring h2 and cause the head of the bolt to be moved out of the notch in the die-plate g, whereupon the said die-plate may IOO be given ahalf-tnrn on its pivot-stud to reverse the position of the female die.

The lower jaw, B, is provided with a slot, k, in the line of the female die 4, so as to permit the clippings from tickets, Sie., to drop,

into the box or receptacle m, removably retained in the jaw B by means of flanges or inwardly-turned upper sides ot' the box (not shown) entering the grooves 11, cntin the sides of said jaw B, as clearly shown in Fig. l.

To reverse the relative positions ofthe male dies 2 and 3, the spring-actuated catch cl is moved on its pivot in toward the body of the jaw A, to Withdraw the toe from the notch e, when the die-plate c maybe readily given a half-turn on its pivot-stud c', and the catch released to lock the die-plate in its new relation by engaging the notch e so brought next to said catch.

The relativepositions ofthe female dies may also be reversed by forcing the spring-actuated bolt 7L partially through the jaw B from the outside, to disengage the head of said bolt from the contiguous noch in the die-plate g. when said plate is free to be turned and locked in its new position.

I Claim- 1. ln a ticket-punch,the jaw A,the die plate c, provided at its back with the pin chaud the two male dies, 2 and 3, projecting from the face of the said plate, and the jaw B and the dieplate having two female dies, combined with the box m, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.

2. The combinatiomwith the jaw ofa ticketpunch provided with a movable die-plate having notches in its periphery, of a bolt passing through the jaw and provided with a nut and coiled spring, substantially as set forth.

3. In a punch, the jaw A and an attached plate, provided with a male die extended from the plate at an angle with relation to the part of thejaw ou which the plate rests, combined with the jaw B and its attached female die-v plate and box in, substantially as described.
