CHESTER FARR DEAN, OF ST. JOHN SBURY, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS-TO HIMSELF AND HARVEY S.
PLACE.
CALDERWVOOD, OF SAME PRUNING IMPLEMENT;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,230, dated March 24, 1885.
Application filed May 1'),
1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHEsTER FARR DEAN,
of St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, I
of the State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw and Pole Attachments; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the followi and represented in the accompanying d ings, of which- Figure 1 is an upper edge or top view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of portions of a saw and pole with my improved connection applied thereto. Figs. 4'and 5 are end views of the two clamping- 1 plates.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claim hereinafter presented, it being for the purpose of attaching a pruning or other saw provided with a handle to a pole, in order forthe saw to be operated by a person having hold of the pole by his hands.
In pruning trees with a saw it is frequently 'diflicult or inconvenient to accomplish such by a person having his hand grasping the handle of the pruning-saw.
My invention is designed to enable him to stand on the ground or to reach from any position in'or under a tree far into it to detach from it by a saw any limb or portion of the 0 tree.
In the drawings, A denotes part of a saw, of which a is the handle, and b a portion of the blade, while G represents part of a pole connected to the said handle by my attachng specification bolt, F,
rawopening with a nut, G, to screw on the screw of the consists in a measure of two metallic plates, D E, arranged against opposite sides of the saw-handle and projecting rearward there- -from, and provided with curved jaws 0r notched or recessed projections c c c, to grasp 40 the pole in manner as shown. A headed screwgoes through both plates and the handh of the saw-handle, and is provided bolt and against one of the plates or a washer, d, between such plate and nut. Between the two plates and for the saw-handle to rest against there is a crescentshaped abutment, H,which at its middle turns freely on a pin, 6, extending from one two plates. This abutment constitutes a back rest for the saw, and turns with it, as it may be moved either into line with the pole or into a position oblique thereto. I
When the pole and the saw-handle are placed 5 5 between the two plates in manner as shown, and the hand-nut is properly screwed up, the pole and saw will be connected together in order for the saw to be worked by a person having hold of the pole.
I claim The combination of the pole and saw with the pivoted abutment, the two jawed plates, and their clamping screw and nut, arranged with the handle of the saw, and with the said 6 5 pole, substantially as set forth.
' CHESTER FARR DEAN.
