FRANCIS AUGUSTUS STRONG,
DRAG- ?nrnsr Urrrcn.
OF OOLEBROOK, VVISOONSIN.
SAW.
FBPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,152, dated March 17, 1885.
Application filed Junc'23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1,15. A. STRONG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Colebrook, in the county of Waushara and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drag-Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved drag-saw. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line :20 a: in Fig. 2.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to that class of machines which are known as drag-saws, and the object of which is to facilitate the operation of crosscut-saws for the purpose of cutting logs, fire-wood, and the like; and my invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts whereby a machine 1s produced which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability,
and general efficiency, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the-drawings, A designates a suitable base having two uprights, B B, set closely together, as shown, and connected with the said base by means of inclined braces O O. In order to insure lightness as well as cheapness and durability, these uprights may be and preferably are constructed offlattened or rectangular tubes of sheet metal. 'The upper ends of the uprights .B B are provided with arms or levers D D, hinged to their outer sides, and provided with downwardly-extending teeth. or prongs E E at their front ends. A brace, F, connects the said arms or levers near their front ends, the said brace being pivotally connected to one of the said arms, and provided at its free end with a perforation, G, which may be fitted over a pin or stud, H, upon the other arm or lever.
I is the operating-lever, the sides of which are provided with anti-friction disks J J,
through which extends a perforation, K,
.adapted to receive the pivoting-pin L, which extends transversely through the posts or uprights B B. The latter are provided with a series of transverse perforations, M M, adapted to receive the said pivoting-pin. It will be seen that the vertical adjustment of the operating-lever is thus provided for, thereby adjusting the device to suit persons of different heights, and also providing for the regulation of the length of stroke. The upper end of the lever I is provided with a pivoted handle, N, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated. The saw 0 is pivoted to the lower end of the operating-lever, as
shown.
P is a weight, secured adjustably to the outer end of the saw for the purpose of holding the latter to its work. The said weight, beingdetachable, enables me to substitute a lighter or a heavier weight, as may be required.
The operation of this device will be readily understood. When logs are to be operated upon, the base of the machine is secured in proper position by means of stakes QQ,driven through the same; The prongs E, at the front ends of the levers D, are then driven into the log, thus holding the device securely while the saw is being manipulated. After sawing through the log the device, which is quite light, may be easily moved to the next place at which it is desired to cut the log.
hen it is desired to use the device for sawing fire-wood, I avail myself of the devices illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. In this view B It designate two posts or uprights secured at a short distance apart, and in the upper ends of which the prongs E of the levers D are driven, thus securing the machine firmly in position.
S designates the. saw-horse, which is arranged adjoining one of the uprights R.
T is a lever pivoted under the saw-horse, and extending in a forward direction into the slot U of a vertical guide, V;
V is a cord or chain, one end of which is attached securely at or near the fulcrum of the leverT, and the other end of which is attached to the said lever. In operation this cord or chain is looped around the piece of wood which it is desired to cut, and the operator may then, by pressing with his foot upon the free end of the lever. hold the wood securely in position while it is being operated upon.
This device is simple in construction, and it may be easily operated for the purposes stated with more satisfactory results than other drag-saws with which I am acquainted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a drag-saw, the combination of the base A, having perforations to receive stakes Q, flattened or rectangular tubular posts or uprights B B, mounted on said base, levers D,
pivoted to the upper ends of said uprights, and having teeth E at their outer ends, pivoted brace F, connecting said levers, permanent or stationary posts R, lever I, pivoted between the uprights B B, and having pivoted handle N and pivoted saw 0, the saw-horse S, lever T, slotted guide V, and cord or chain \V, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS AUGUSTUS STRONG.
