Description

, UNITED sraras ramena" onirica.
DANIEL IV. HENDERSON, OF DEERFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
STUIVIP-MACHINE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 31,386, dated February 12, 1861.
To all whom 'itmay concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL Ins'rnn IIENnERsoN,'of Deerfield, in the county of IVal-ren, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Stump-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the aecompz'lnying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents my machine with all its parts adjusted in working order.
A, A, are strong upright posts wellv braced and set on a shoeor runners as shown in drawing. Y is a cross piece, B B two ties connecting A A with the three upright posts C, C, C. These posts C C C stand on a foot D and are securely bound together by the cross piece X. This constitutes the frame of my machine.
E, F, are levers resting on an iron fulcruin at, Y.
a is a pulley on the long end of the lever, E, over this pulley runs a cord or rope M, M, M, M, one end of this rope is fastened at 18 on one of the posts, C, it then passes over theA pulley u then down Linder the pulley s and over the shaft of the wheel and axle 14.
a a is a shorter rope attached to the long ends of the levers E, F, passing over the pulley IV on cross piece X by means of this rope when the lever E is drawn down, F,
lifted up.
P, P, is another rope similar to M, M, M, M, on the lever F passing over the pulley T, and on the roller let exactly like BI, M, M, M, only with this difference c., P P passes over the roller 14k and M, M, M, M, under the same, and by this arrangement it is evident that on turning the roller 14 in one direction the rope M M M M is wound up and P P unwound thus drawing down the lever E and drawing up the lever F, and by reversing the motion of 14 the contrary result is produced.
On the roller 14 are two drum wheels II, and G. On these wheels the ropes N, N, N, and O, O, O, are wound in opposite directionsas are the ropes M M M M and P, P. To these ropes horses may be hitched when desired. By this construction the machine may be used by hand power applied to the cranks s s or horse power by attach` ing teams to the ropes O O and N K is a bar of iron with slots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in it. On'the lower end are hooks Il to hook onto the roots of stumps; on the short end of the levers E and F are hooks one of which is shown t' Fig. l and both of them o, S, Fig. 2. These hooks have eye bolts on their upper end which pass through the levers and are fastened with a nut and screw. See e' .e Fig. 1.
Fig. 2 better shows the hooks. K is the bar of iron with the slots (1 2 3 #t 5 Fig. 1) in it. 111, S, are the hooks of iron, 9, 10, are slides attached to hooks o, S, and through which K passes. (3, 7, are springs attached to slides 9, 10, which throw the hooks into the slots 1, 2, 3, 4t,
The machine operates as follows to wit, when the hooks L are placed under the roots of a stump and the crank s is turned and the rope M M M M wound up. The long end of the lever E is drawn down. The hook 'v is now in slot 4. This of course draws K up and pulls on the stump at the same time the long end of the lever F is going up as before described, and the hook S (Fig. Q) on its short end is getting ready to pass into slot 3 in K as soon as it shall reach it. IVhen this`is done the motion of the crank s/ is reversed and F goes down as E did and this continued until the bar K is drawn up to the last slot and the stump is thereby raised.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. The construction of the bar K in combination with the hooks o, 8, constructed and combined as described.
2. Connecting the levers E and F together by the cord c e, the. same operated by means of the combination of the cords M, M, M, M P, P, N N N, O O. O, the pulleys U, S, T, IV, and the wheel and axle 14 G, H, when the same are construct-ed in the aforesaid combination and for the purposes set forth.
DANIEL WEBSTER HENDERSON.
