(Cl. 16-59) The present invention relates to a door-closing device, comprising a closing shaft which cooperates with a hydraulic damper consisting of a piston and a cylinder.
It is desirable to adapt the door-closing devices to novel doors having a narrow frame and to design the door-closing devices with minimum overall dimensions. In such known door-closing devices it has been possible to reduce the overall height by arranging the space required for the closing spring within the projection of the cross-section of the cylinder of the damper. This resulted, however, in an increase in overall length because the arrangement of the spring space beside the cylinder space increases the overall length beyond that of those closing devices in which the spring space is above the cylinder space. The known closing devices having a low overall height have the additional disadvantages that the housing structure is complicated and the cylinder chambers can be closed at the high-pressure ends, which can be sealed only with difliculty.
It is one object of the present invention to provide a door-closing device having a low overall height without increase in overall length, which device should have a simple housing structure, which can be reliably sealed against oil leakage.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a door closing device which includes a piston and a cylinder, both having a width greater than their height.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a door-closing device wherein the fiat design given to the damper may be obtained with various cross-sectional shapes, e.g., with an oval cross-section or a rectangular one having rounded edges. In a particularly de sirable cross-sectional shape according to another feature of the present invention, the narrow sides of the piston are semicylindrical and the wide sides are flat.
With these and other objects of the present invention in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an axial section taken along lines 1-1 of FIG. 2, and showing the door-closing device;
FIG. 2 is a section, taken along the lines 2--2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the door-closing device, in which the damper is shown in section.
Referring now to the drawing, the door closing device constitutes a damper comprising a piston 3 and being contained in a housing 2 which is disposed below a closing spring 1 of the door-closing device. According to the present invention, the piston 3 has a low height and is formed according to FIG. 3 with semicircular narrow sides 6 and flat wide sides 7. Owing to the low height of the damper, the door-closing device, according to the present invention, has a low overall height although the space of the closing spring 1 is disposed above the damper. At its end wall facing the high-pressure chamber the piston 3 is provided with a sealing cup 16 providing a seal 3,135,009 Patented June 2, 1964 against the cylinder wall. The housing 2 has only one opening, which is desirably disposed on the low-pressure side of the piston 3 and can be tightly sealed without difficulty by means of a cover 17. The piston 3 can be reciprocated by a closing shaft 9, which is sealed in a bushing 8 screw-threaded in the housing 2, by means of a crank drive or an eccentric member 11, which is provided at the lower end of the closing shaft 9 and carries a pin 12. The eccentric member 11 is disposed within the cylinder bore of the damper and moves in a circular recess 13 of the piston 3 during a rotation of the closing shaft 9. Its pin 12, provided with a roller 14, engages a slot 15 extending in the piston 3 transversely to the direction of movement of the latter. The closing device, according to the present invention, is also provided with a relief valve 18, which co-operates with the closing shaft 9 and the eccentric pin 12 and enables a rapid movement of the door during the last phase of the closing movement. The valve 18 has a valve ball 21 and a stem 22, which isslidably mounted in a bore 20. The stem 22 extends into the slot 15 of the piston 3 and has a smaller cross-section than the bore 20 and of, e.g., cruciform or oval shape.
During the last phase of the closing movement the eccentric pin 12 rotates past the stem 22 and displaces the same against the valve ball 21, so that the latter is unseated against the action of a spring 24 and permits the rapid flow of oil from the high-pressure chamber through the bore 20 and the door is closed at increased speed.
The door-closing device, according to the present invention, is intended for doors which are hinged on the right or left. For this purpose the inner end of the closing spring 1 is connected to a bushing 25 which rotates with the closing shaft 9. Depending upon the use of the closing device, the outer end of the closing spring 1 may be hung over one of the longitudinal edges 26, 27 of the web 28 carried by the housing 2.
While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claims.
I claim:
1. A door closing device comprising a hydraulic damper including a casing having a bore of a width larger than its height and extending through the entire length of said casing,
a piston of a cross-section complementary to that of said casing and disposed in said bore for reciprocating movement substantially along the entire length of said bore,
a closing shaft mounted for rotation in said casing and including means for reciprocating said piston upon rotation of said closing shaft,
said piston-reciprocating means comprising crank mounted on said closing shaft and a pin extending from the free end of said crank,
said piston having a circular recess receiving and disposed within the plane of rotation of said crank, and
said piston having a crosswise disposed slot receiving said pin and disposed below and extending from said circular recess,

Claims (1)

1. A DOOR CLOSING DEVICE COMPRISING A HYDRAULIC DAMPER INCLUDING A CASING HAVING A BORE OF A WIDTH LARGER THAN ITS HEIGHT AND EXTENDING THROUGH THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF SAID CASING, A PISTON OF A CROSS-SECTION COMPLEMENTARY TO THAT OF SAID CASING AND DISPOSED IN SAID BORE FOR RECIPROCATING MOVEMENT SUBSTANTIALLY ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF SAID BORE, A CLOSING SHAFT MOUNTED FOR ROTATION IN SAID CASING AND INCLUDING MEANS FOR RECIPROCATING SAID PISTON UPON ROTATION OF SAID CLOSING SHAFT, SAID PISTON-RECIPROCATING MEANS COMPRISING CRANK MOUNTED ON SAID CLOSING SHAFT AND A PIN EXTENDING FROM THE FREE END OF SAID CRANK, SAID PISTON HAVING A CIRCULAR RECESS RECEIVING AND DISPOSED WITHIN THE PLANE OF ROTATION OF SAID CRANK, AND SAID PISTON HAVING A CROSSWISE DISPOSED SLOT RECEIVING SAID PIN AND DISPOSED BELOW AND EXTENDING FROM SAID CIRCULAR RECESS, A CLOSING SPRING SURROUNDING SAID CLOSING SHAFT AND DISPOSED ON TOP OF SAID CASING AND WITHIN THE AXIAL LENGTH OF SAID BORE, ONE END OF SAID CLOSING SPRING BEING SECURED TO SAID CLOSING SHAFT AND THE OTHER END OF SAID SPRING BEING SECURED TO SAID CASING, SAID CASING BEING CLOSED ON THE HIGH PRESSURE SIDE OF SAID PISTON AND HAVING AN OPENING AT THE LOW PRESSURE SIDE OF SAID PISTON, AND A COVER REMOVABLY AND SEALINGLY SECURED TO SAID OPENING OF SAID CASING.
