PATENT 0F FOLSOM, CALIFORNIA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 313,226, dated March 3, 1885.
- Application filed January 22, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. MILGATE, of Folsom, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in gates; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of' parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view showing my improved gate raised, the base being shown in section through the recess into which the gate folds. Fig. 2 is the same view, but showing the gate folded into the recess. Fig. 3 is a View at a right angle to Fig. 1, showing the operating devices of the gate.
In my construction I make a gate, A, adapted to be folded together by a longitudinal movement of the upper portion or bar, B, so that this portion and all bars between it and a lower bar, 0, will be closed in by the side of the bar 0, and lie wholly in a recess, D, in a base, E, which is made from two timbers secured to cross-pieces E, with space between them, forming a recess, D, to receive the gate, as above named. This base is sunk in the roadway about to a level with it, and a gate folded in this recess is out of the way for a team to pass over. The bars B G are pivoted to the end pieces, F G, and the end F, by the pin H, is pivoted to the base E. The end G is secured at the bottom to the inner end of a weighted arm, K, made to extend outward from its connection with the end piece G, forming a counter-balance of the gate. This arm has also a part, L, projected from the upper side, to assist the arm K in passing the center. This arm K is pivoted, by the pin 0, to the base E out of the line of pivots which unite the longitudinal bars with the end piece G.
To the part L of the arm K, outside of the pin 0, is pivoted a rod, M, which extends up to a triangular plate or three-armed lever, N, hung near the top of a post, P, set near to and at the side of the rear end of the gate, from which plate N rods or other connections, M, extend out both ways on the line of the road to triangular plates N on posts P, set
0 model.)
| at a suitable distance from the gate for convenience in operating it, from which plate N rods M extend up to the short inner ends of levers Q, pivoted in the tops of said posts P, and extending therefrom toward the center of the roadway, and having depending .cords R at their outer ends for opening and closing the gate from either side of the same. Thus it will be seen that by pulling down on either cord R the arm K will be raised, carrying over the end piece G, secured to it, which, by the bar B, pushes over the end F, and when the arm K has passed the center of gravity, the weight of the arm and the gate will carry the gate down, entirely folding it, and opening the roadway.
To close the gate, the cord is pulled, carrying over the arm K, and lifting up the gate until the arm again passes the center of gravity and falls down, unfolding the gate, and its weight will hold the gate .in a vertical position, closing the roadway.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the gate A, base E, and arm K, all substantially as set forth, of the connections M, M, and M plates or angle-levers N N levers Q, and posts P P, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
' 2. The combination, with the base E, having recess D, of the pivoted end pieces, F G, the latter being provided with the arm K, the top and bottom bars, B O, pivoted to opposite sides of the said end pieces, the operating-levers Q, and intermediate connections for connecting the said lever to one of the end pieces, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a gate, the combination of the base E, having the recess D, a folding gate, A, having the end pieces, F G, the end F being pivoted to the base E, and the end G secured to a weighted arm, K, which arm is pivoted by its inner end to the base E, the posts PP, levers Q, and connections M M M and N N, the connections M being attached to the arm K at a point above and out of the line of the pivot O and the pivots of the gate-base, and said arm K being also weighted at L, substantially as shown and described.
. Witnesses: GEORGE CAREY MILGA'IE.
