(Cl. 2-96) The present invention relates generally to garment trim; more particularly, it relates to detachable decorative garment trim for use with articles of wearing apparel such as sweaters.

This application is a continuation of application Serial No. 863,268, now abandoned.

The detachable garment trim of the present invention is attachable by means of the closure buttons and buttonholes of a garment such as a sweater. The trim serves to adorn the garment and may be utilized to produce a matching ensemble with another item or items of apparel. The invention makes it possible to increase the range of utility and style of a single garment such as a sweater, by matching it with other items of apparel to form different ensembles by attaching various designs and patterns of trim to the garment.

A preferred form of the invention includes decorative trim panels extending along the front of a garment such as a sweater, one of the trim panels being provided with buttons and the other with button holes. These buttons and buttonholes are spaced in correspondence with the buttonholes and buttons of the sweater, and the trim panels are thereby attachable to the garment. The buttons spaced along one detachable trim panel are engaged in the buttonholes of the garment, and the buttonholes spaced along the other trim panel engage the garment buttons. The buttons and holes of the detachable trim are attached to and defined in attachment strips secured to the reverse side of the respective decorative trim panels, and the buttons and holes are thereby concealed. A neck portion may be utilized to fit about the neck of a wearer and connect the trim panels.

In a modified form of the invention, buttons and holes are provided on and in the respective trim panels themselves. The garment buttons extend through the buttonholes of a trim panel and are visible. In another modified form of the invention, the trim panels overlap and are provided with additional sets of buttons and buttonholes so that the trim panels may be buttoned to each other for the purpose of closing the garment.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved detachable garment trim.

An object of this invention is the provision of a garment trim which is readily attachable to a garment such as a sweater for the purpose of providing a matching ensemble with other items of apparel.

It is an object of this invention to provide a detachable garmenta trim for augmenting the range of utility of a garment such as a sweater by matching the garment with various other items of apparel to provide a plurality of ensembles.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a detachable garment trim for improving the appearance and style of sweaters and like garments.

Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent to those versed in the art from an examination of the following description, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawing, and particularly to FIGURES 1, 2, and 3, there is shown a preferred embodiment of the detachable garment trim of the present invention. In FIGURE 1 a decorative garment trim 10 is shown attached to a garment or sweater 12 being worn by a person. The structural details of the detachable trim 10 are shown in FIGURES 2 and 3. It is preferably fabricated of a fabric material having a desired configuration and having a selected pattern and colors. The trim 10 comprises a collar or neck portion 14 and

16, 18 which extend along the edge areas of the right and left front panels of the garment 12. It will be readily appreciated that the garment trim 10 may bear any artistic or decorative pattern and that it may have any selected artistic configuration.

A plurality of buttons 24 are attached in a row to the attachment strip 20 and are spaced in correspondence with buttonholes 26 of the left front panel of sweater 12. A plurality of buttonholes 27 are defined in the attachment strip 22 and are spaced to correspond with the buttons 28 spaced in a row along the edge area of the right front panel of the sweater, as shown. The buttons on the attachment strip 20 are engaged in the buttonholes of the garment, and the garment buttons are engaged in the buttonholes of the attachment trim 22. To attach the detachable trim 10 to the sweater, the trim 10 is merely slipped about the wearers neck and the

16, 18 are attached by engagement of the buttons and buttonholes of the attachment strips with the holes and buttons of the sweater. The resultant appearance gives the impression that the detachable trim 10 is a permanent part of the sweater or other garment to which it is attached.

A modified form of the detachable garment trim of the present invention is illustrated in FIGURES 4 and 5. A detachable trim 30 is shown as including decorative trim panels 32, 34. The trim panel 32 carries a plurality of buttons spaced to correspond with the garment buttonholes 26, and the trim panel 34 is provided with a plurality of buttonholes spaced to correspond with the garment buttons 28. The trim panels are secured directly to the sweater, as shown.

40, 42 are respectively provided with a plurality of buttonholes and a plurality of buttons which are in registration so that the overlapping portions may be buttoned together so that the garment is secured or held closed by the detachable trim. The trim thus appears to be a part of the garment itself. Although no neck portion is provided with the detachable trim 3 shown in FIGURES 6 and 7, it will be appreciated that any of the forms of the invention may be utilized with or without a neck portion.

Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the present invention achieves the objects and realizes the advantages hereinbefore mentioned. A detachable garment trim is provided which has a high degree of utility in improving the appearance of garments and in augmenting their range of utility and style. A garment may be quickly and convenien tly made to match a mating garment or garments to form an ensemble. A single garment, such as a sweater, may be utilized with a number of different complementary garments to provide a matching ensemble with each such other garment.

Although specific embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described herein, it will be understood that the same are merely exemplary of presently preferred embodiments capable of attaining the objects and advantages hereinbefore mentioned, and that the invention is not limited thereto; variations will be readily apparent to those versed in the art, and the invention is entitled to the broadest interpretation within the terms of the appended claims.

The inventor claims:

I 1. In combination with a garment wherein separated front panels have closure means comprising a row of garment buttons and a row of cooperating garment buttonholes adjacent to respective edges of the front panels, first and second decorative trim panels extending to the rcspec- 'tive edges of the garment front panels, said first trim panel having a row of buttonholes therein corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment closure buttons, and said second trim panel having a row of buttons on the reverse side thereof corresponding in spaced relationship to and extending through said garment closure buttonholes to conceal the garment buttonholes and trim panel buttons, whereby the decorative trim panels are respectively attachable to the garment along the row of garment closure buttons and the row of garment closure buttonholes.

2. In combination with a garment wherein separated 'front panels having closure means comprising a row of garment buttons'and arow of cooperating garment buttonholes adjacent to respective edges of the front panels, first and second decorative trim panels, said first trim panel having a row of buttonholes therein corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment closure buttons, and said second trim panel having a row of buttons on the reverse side thereof corresponding in spaced relationship to and extending through said garment closure buttonholes to conceal the garment buttonholes and trim panel buttons, whereby the decorative trim panels are respectively attachable to the garment along the row of garment closure buttons and the row of garment closure buttonholes.

3. In combination with a garment having closure means comprising a line of buttons and a line of cooperating buttonholes,-first and second decorative trim panels, a first attachment strip secured to the first trim panel and having a row of buttonholes therein corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment buttons, and a second attachment strip secured to the second trim panel and having a row of buttons attached thereto corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment buttonholes, whereby the first and second trim panels are respectively attached to the garment along said row of garment buttons and said row of garment buttonholes.

4. In combination with a garment having closure means comprising a line of buttons and a line of cooperating buttonholes, first and second decorative trim panels, a first attachment strip secured to the first trim panel and having a row of buttonholes therein corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment buttons, and a second attachment strip secured to the second trim panel and having a row of buttons attachedthereto corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment buttonholes, each of said trim panels extending beyond the attachment strip secured thereto to provide overlapping portions of the first and second trim panels when the trim panels are attached to the garment, one of said trim panel overlapping portions of cooperating garment buttonholes on edge areas of the respective front panels, a neck portion shaped to fit about the neck of a wearer, first and second trim panels extending from the neck portion down the respective front panels of the garment along the row of garment buttons and the row of garment buttonholes, a first attachment strip secured to the first trim panel and having a row of buttonholes therein corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment buttons, and a second attachment strip secured to the second trim panel and having a row of buttons attached thereto corresponding in spaced relationship to said garment buttonholes, whereby the first and second trim panels are respectively attached to said edge areas of the garment front panels by saidgarment buttons and said garment buttonholes.

Claims

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A GARMENT WHEREIN SEPARATED FRONT PANELS HAVE CLOSURE MEANS COMPRISING A ROW OF GARMENT BUTTONS AND A ROW OF COOPERATING GARMENT BUTTONHOLES ADJACENT TO RESPECTIVE EDGES OF THE FRONT PANELS, FIRST AND SECOND DECORATIVE TRIM PANELS EXTENDING TO THE RESPECTIVE EDGES OF THE GARMENT FRONT PANELS, SAID FIRST TRIM PANEL HAVING A ROW OF BUTTONHOLES THEREIN CORRESPONDING IN SPACED RELATIONSHIP TO SAID GARMENT CLOSURE BUTTONS, AND SAID SECOND TRIM PANEL HAVING A ROW OF BUTTONS ON THE REVERSE SIDE THEREOF CORRESPONDING IN SPACED RELATIONSHIP TO AND EXTENDING THROUGH SAID GARMENT CLOSURE BUTTONHOLES TO CONCEAL THE GARMENT BUTTONHOLES AND TRIM PANEL BUTTONS, WHEREBY THE DECORATIVE TRIM PANELS ARE RESPECTIVELY ATTACHABLE TO THE GARMENT ALONG THE ROW OF GARMENT CLOSURE BUTTONS AND THE ROW OF GARMENT CLOSURE BUTTONHOLES.
