SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,545, dated February 17, 1885. Application filed November 6, 1584. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN HENRY ZEILIN, a.

name-plate in position; Fig. 3, a section on the I line 1 2, Fig. 2; modifications.

A is the shank of the key, a the bit, and B the head, which may be of any form desired. A tapered undercut groove, 1), is formed in the head; and to this groove is adapted a plate, D, which is tapered and has beveled edges corresponding with the groove b in the head. On the plate D is stamped, out, or cast the name or number of the room to which the key belongs, or the name of the owner of and Figs. 4 and 5, views of i the key. The plate D is inserted in the groove and forced tightly into place in the head B. The edge 00 of the key may then be burred, which will prevent the plate from slipping out of place, or the end y of the plate may be barred with the same effect. end of the key in this case being burred at,

the point a: to retain the plate in position.

In the modification Fig. 5, a recess, 10, is made in the head; and the plate D is correspondingly indented by punching after it has been slipped into its place in the head of the key. The plate can be inserted in any portion of the head, according to the style of the key used.

By providing a key with the above described name-plate a key belonging to a certain room can be marked as desired, and if the lock is changed or removed to another door the name-plate can be detached from the key and a new name-plate inserted.

I claim as my invention-' As a new article of manufacture, a key having a detachable name-plate, all substantially as described.
