SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,478, dated February 17, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. LAMME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county ofTravis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvlnents in Kettle Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to kettles for boiling and evaporating in candy-makin g or any similar process, and provides an attachment to be used with the kettle, whereby the boiling over of the material and the consequentrunning ofthe same down the sides of the said kettle are prevented. The material that would ordinarily flow over the sides of the kettle and waste is by the use of the device hereinafter described saved, and any and all danger of fire from the overflowing sugar in candy inanufacture is prevented.

The device can be attached to any ordinary bOilingkettle, and can be used with any substance that has atendeney to effervesce on being boiled.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section through a kettle with the attaclr inent thereon, and Fig. 2 a detail perspective 'of a piece adapted to close the spout when desired.

A represents a kettle of any desired construction, and adapted to boiling purposes. On the top of the kettle, and fitting in it. is the metal ring D, which is provided at dili'erent points on its outer surface with pieces 1), adapted to rest on the projecting edge of the kettle and support the said ring B. This ring is provided on one side with a spout, 0, projecting from a proper opening through the rin D represents a piece of metal of the shape shown in Fig. 2, and is adapted to close the openingin the ring leading to the spout. From the top of this piece is continued the tongue E, which is bent forward on its top, as shown. The material of the piece is also continued on each side of the tongue and bent downward to form the spring-clamps F, which are adapted to fit over the rim-wire of the ring on that portion that crosses the opening on the side of the said ring. It will readily be seen that should the material in boiling rise above the level of the kettle it will flow through the be liable to boil over the top of the ring, the piece D is left down, so as to close the hole in the said ring, so as to prevent it from escaping through the said hole.

Being aware of the fact that heretofore various kinds of covers provided with spouts are disclaiined Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An attachment for kettles of ashapecorattachment projecting above the walls of the kettle, around the edges of which it fits, having neither top nor bottom, and being provided with a spout, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. An attachment for kettles of a shapecorresponding to the general contour thereof, said attachment projecting above the walls of the kettle, having neither top nor bottom, and provided with a spout below its upper edge, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The ring provided with a spout and having a removable hinged piece to close or open the spent, the whole adapted to fit in a kettle,

4. An attachment for kettles, consisting of a ring provided with a wire strengtheningrim, and a spout projecting from a recess in the said ring, and apiece provided with springclanips which rest on and over a portion of the wire rim, and an extended continuation forming a handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
