I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VOLNEY W. MASON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ELEVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,504, dated February 3,1885.
Application filed June 17, 1884 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VoLNEY W. MAsoN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My improvements relate to hand and power elevators; and the invention consists in mechanism for multiplying the power combined withhoisting-chains and abalance-weight, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of an elevator of the improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Upon the cross-timbers at the top of well A is a shaft, a, carrying, two chain or sprocket wheels, I) b, and upon one end of the shaft is a large wheel or pulley, f, having a grooved periphery. On a short counter-shaft at one side of shaft a two, chain-wheels, c c, are attached. The chains 01 d from the car B pass over the chain-wheels b on shaft a to and over the Wheels 0, and havea balance-Weight, e, at tached to their ends, so that the car is sustained, or nearly so, by the weight at all times. An endless hand'rope, 9. passes around wheel f and down into the well, one side going (Xo model.)
ing against wheel f. From the lever a rope, 2', extends downward in position for being grasped to operate the brake for stopping the car or regulating its descent. The rope also extends upward from the lever over a pulley and carries a weight, is, which acts to draw back the brake.
When steam or other power is to be used for raising and lowering the car, the Wheel f will be replaced by any suitable gearing.
By using the large wheel f on the shaft carrying the small chain-wheels the power is multiplied, and, the car being balanced, the work of raising it is comparatively light.
Having thus described my inventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an elevator, the hoisting mechanism consisting of shaft (1, chain-wheels b c, and hand rope wheel f, combined with chains d and balance-Weight e, substantially as described.
2. In an elevator, the combination, with the suspension-chains, of chainwvheels b b on the operatingshaft a, substantially as described.
3. The brake-lever h and rope t, combined with the operating-wheel f, said rope being connected to said lever and passed over a pulley, with aweight, k, attached to one end, and with its other end extended down for convenient manipulation of the operator, whereby the same rope or medium is adapted to apply and release the brake, substantially as described.
