UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BHAKIN S, OENORVOOD, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALE TO HENRY G. PERT, OE SAME PLACE.
oRNAMi-:NTAL SCREW-HEAD CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,122, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed April 3, 1F84. (No mfdel.)
To all whom t may concern.- Y
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HAKINs, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Norwood, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Screw-Head Caps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, lwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure lis a perspective view illustrating the application of my improved ornamental screw head or cap. Fig. 2 is a perspective inverted view of the screw head or cap removed. Fig. 3 is a plan ofthe blank l'rom which the cap is struck up before bending it into shape,` and Eig. 4 is a sectional view through the screw-head and its cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate correliIy invention has relation to removable ornamental caps or heads adapted to be fastened upon the nicked heads of wood-screws and other screws; and it consists in the improved cap made ot' any suitable metal and ornamented in any desired style, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes an ordinary wood-screw, the head B of which has the usual transverse nick, C.
The cap consists of a piece of any suitable sheet metal cut or stamped to form a blank of the shape shown in Eig. 3, having wings D, adapted to be set up at right angles, so as to form a shallow box or casing of such a size that it will tit over the head of the screw. Two of the wings D,that are opposite to each other, are indented on the outside to form in,- wardly-projecting lugs or catches E,of such a size and shape that they will pass through the nicked edge of the screw-head.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the application of my ornamental cap will be readily understood. It is fastened upon the screw-head by placing it over the head in such a position that the inwardly-projecting catches E E will register with and slip through the ends of the nick C, after which the cap is turned to one side, so as to bring the catches E E in under the overlapping bevel of the screw-head B, in which position the cap will be held tirmly upon the head. The wings D also operate in a measure to fasten the cap upon the beveled head by springing over the rim or edge of the same.
While I prefer to construct my detachable ornamental cap or head of sheet metal in the manner shown, it may, if desired, be made of cast metal, in which case the catches E are cast upon the anges D. In that case, of course, the cap is heid upon the screw-head simply by interlocking the inwardly-projecting catches E with the overlapping head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The detachable ornamental cap for screwheads, consisting of an ornamental shallowboX or case having inwardly-projecting lugs or catches E E, adapted to engage the slots formed by the nick in the screw-head, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, an ornamental cap for screw-heads, consisting of a blank of sheet metal cut to form the Wings D, having said wings set up at right angles, and provided with indent-ations forming the inwardly-projecting catches E E opposite to each other, and adapted to engage the slots formed by the nick in the screw-head,
substantially as and for the purpose shown l and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. HAKINS.
