A. L. KITSELMAN.
t ROLLER ATE.
Patented Jan. 20
IJVVEWTOR Attorn y .UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE.
ALVA L. KITSELMAN, or RIDGEVILLE, INDIANA.
ROLLER-SKATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311.077, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed March .27, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVA L. KrrsnLMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Itidgeville, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Roller-Skate, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to roller-skates; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the same may be longitudinally adjustable for various sizes of feet.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for adjusting the sections longitudinally and preventing any 1ateral movement or possibility of their disengagement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a skate with improved means for adjusting the same, which shall be extremely simple, and yet durable in their construction and thoroughly effective and positive in their operation.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the combination, with a skate constructed of two sections or trucks, of an adjusting-plate, which will be more fully described.
The invention further consists in the im proved construction of the sections and ad justing-plate for the same, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roller-skate constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the sections adjusted about midway of the length of which they are capable of being lengthened. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjusting-plate detached.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a skate constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being composed of two sections, B, the foot plates or rests of which are provided with longitudinal slots or openings at, which commence at a point a short distance in front of their ends, while their ends are provided with openings b,to receive set-screws for clamping the adjustingplate and holding it securely in position.
(No model.)
0 represents the adj ustingplate, which is provided with a longitudinal slot, 0, through which pass the set-screws, their heads bearing against the sides of the slot. Upon the ends of this clamping-plate O are provided downwardly-extending T-shaped lugs, which areadapted to slide in the longitudinal slot of the plates of the two sections B, the upper end or cross-arm of these T-shaped lugs bearing against the under sides of said plate adjacent to the slot. By the use of these T- shaped lugs all possibility of the sections turning, and the consequent displacement of the foot while the skates are being used, is thoroughly prevented.
To adjust the skate, or, more properly, the
sections, it is only necessary to loosen the set-screws and move the sections either to or from each other, according to whether the skate is to be lengthened or shortened, the adj usting-plate being held in position. When the desired adjustment has been reached, the set-screws are tightened and the skate ready for use.
' It will be seen from the above description that by the use of my improved means for adjusting the sections a firm and secure fastening is obtained. It will also be seen that movement either laterally or longitudinally is throughly prevented, and that the improvement is simple and may be applied at a slight cost. It will also be obvious that, if desired, the T-shaped lugs which I have provided upon the adjusting-plate may be formed upon the plates of the sections B, in which case they would be inserted in the slot of the adjusting-plate and slide therein.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. The combination, with aroller-skate constructed of two sections, the footrests of which are each provided with slots, of a plate provided with a slot extending nearlyits entire length and connecting saidsections, and set-screws for clamping said plate at any desired point on said sections, substantially as set forth.
2. In a roller-skate, the combination, with two sections, the foot rests or plates of which are provided with longitudinal slots and per- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as forations or openings near their ends, of an my own I have hereto affiXed my signature in adj usting-plate having alongitudinal slot, and presence of two Witnesses.
provided at its ends with downwardlyeX- 5 tending T-shaped lugs, and set-serews'fo'r securing the parts at the proper adjustment,
substantially as set forth.
