NITED STATES PATENT IFFICE.
JULIUS CESAR HERO, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,055, dated December 30,1884.
Application filed November 4, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUs CESAR HERO, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the boot leg and foot complete without the sole. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal view of the lower part of the leg and foot, showing the elastic gore applied to the lining. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the vamp. Fig. 4 isa plan view of agore. Fig. 5 isa plan view of the outside counter. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the facing for the gore. Fig. 7 is a plan of the lining and its elastic gore on the instep.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in boots which are composed of several uncrimped pieces stitched together, a slit being left in front over the instep provided with a lacing for the purpose of relieving the instep from undue pressure, and also for allowing the boot to be put on and taken ofi readily.
Iucarrying out my invention I provide in the lining directly beneath the lacing-slit over the instep an elastic gore, or I perforate the lining itself, in order to afford elasticity and comfort to the foot, all of which will be fully understood from the following description, When taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A designates the leg of the boot, which is composed of a front portion, a, and a back portion, a, united by stitching along each side.
13 designates the vamp, and G the counter, which are united by scams 1), in line with the side stitching of the leg.
D designates the lining, which is united at the scams 1) to the counter and heel stiffening c, and is also united to the front part, a, of the leg inside thereof.
E designates the gore or instepcovering,
which is formed with a long tongue, 0, and stitched to the upper edge of the vamp B and to the front part, a, of the boot-leg A. This gore E hasa slit, e, extending from the high est part of the instep to the lowest point there of, and on opposite sides of this slit, and extending a short distance along the vamp and over the gore, is a re-enforcing facing for the lacing-eyelets f. Beneath the slit through'the gore I make an opening through the lining D, and close this opening by an elastic gore, g, which will accommodate itself comfortably to the instep of the foot of the wearer.
Instead of using the elastic gore g, I may perforate the lining over the instep with numerous small holes, which will allow the required elasticity. I also contemplate substituting for the leather goreor outer instepcovering a gore of similar form to that shown in Fig. 4.
It will be observed that I am able to use in the construction of my boot pieces of leather which, while they neatly accommodate themselves to the foot and lower leg of a person, do not require to be crimped.
It will also be observed that while I have an open or slitted goring for-the instep of the boot provided with an adjustable lacing, I
close this opening against the admission of' water by means of an inside elastic gore applied to the lining of the vamp.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination, in a boot, of the two leg portions united to the vamp and counter, the slitted gore, its facing and lining united to the boot leg and vamp, and an elastic instepgore, substantially as described.
2. A boot having an elastic instep-gore applied to a lining, D, and a slitted gore, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signaturcin presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS CESAR HERO.
