To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. STONE, a outer edges.
citizen of the United States, residing at Mutual, in the county of Champaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reshipping PackingBoxes,
of which the following is a specification, ref-' erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to knockdown reshipping packing-boxes; and it consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly claimed in the specification,and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved box when set up ready for use;
Fig. 2, a perspective View of same when knocked down, Fig. 3, a perspective view of a crate constructed on the principle of the box; Fig. 4, a section of same; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of the box opened out.
The object of my invention is to construct a box that can be easily and quickly set up or knocked down, and that is substantial and economic in construction- To this end I construct the box as follows: The several pieces forming the top, bottom, and sides of the box are cut to proper sizes. The top piece has secured to it the exterior cleats, a, and the edge cleats, n. The rear side has also secured to it the exterior cleats, a, and the front side the cleats p. Hinges g are fastened to the cleats a a of the top and rear side and hinges g secured to the cleats p and the bottom of the box. This permits the top 0 to be turned or folded back on the rear side,A,and the front side,D, to be turn ed back on the bottom B.
In order that the rear side,A,and bottomB may be brought together when the box is knocked down, I have placed the hinges d on the inside. of the box, securing them to the bottom B and rear side, A. The front side, D, has the end pieces, E, secured to it by the interior hinges, 0. These hinges permit the ends to be folded inwardly on the front side, D, when the box is knocked down. It is also provided with the end cleats, m. The bottom 13 has two cleats, b 11, secured to it near its WV hen the box is set up, the lower edges of the end pieces, E, rest in the space between the cleats, the vertical inner edges of said end pieces resting against the vertical cleats is, secured to the outer edges of the rear side, A. These cleats prevent the ends from slipping or being pushed either in or out. For additional safety and security hooks hare secured to the ends E and hook into staple t on the rear side,A. A clasp, G, and staple G hold the box secured or locked in its upright position.
' It will be observed that when the box is set up the cleats it rest on the top of cleats k m, thus completely covering the edges-'ofthe box. These cleats also serve to keep the sides from warping. A cleat, f, on the end of E also serves the same purpose.
' The box being in its set-up position, as shown in Fig. l, and it is desired to knock it downfor reshipment, the operation is as follows: The clasp G having been removed from engagement with staple G and the hooks h from staple i, the top 0 is raised. The front side, D, is then turned outwardly (tide Fig. and the ends E folded inwardly on the side D. The top 0 is turned backward on side A. The side A is folded forward on the interior side of bottom B and the side D next folded backward on the exterior of bottom B. The box is then in position shown in Fig. 2. In this figure the side D, instead' of side A, is shown uppermost in order to more clearly show the folding ends E. It isimmaterial which sid ,A or D, is uppermost when the box is knocked down for reshipment. It will thus be seen that by this construction the box is not only very strong and can stand the wear and tear of freight transportation, but at'the same time is as light as compatible with security. Moreover, there is no danger of the parts becoming lost or detached by knocking down or setting up, as is the case with forms of boxes having detachable sides and ends. A fruit-crate or egg-box,
such as shown in Fig 3, can be made in like manner and be readily knocked down for reshipment, thus saving space in storage and in cars. Such a box or crate is useful to ship and the ends E can be orated and the bottom B be left solid, thus converting the crateinto a coop.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is
1. In a reshipping packing-box, the combination, with the bottom having the cleats b b, of the side A, folding-down on the bottom, and the side D, having the inwardly-folding ends E and folding outwardly on the bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In areshipping packing-box, the eo1nbination of the bottom B, having the cleats b b, the side A, hinged to said bottom and provided with the vertical cleats k, and the side D, hinged to the bottom and provided with the hinged ends E, said ends folding inwardly on the side D, and said side adapted to fold outwardly on the bottom B, substantiallyin the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a reshipping packing-box, the combination of the bottom B, having the cleats 7) b, the side A, hinged to said bottom and having the exterior cleats, a, and vertical interior cleats, 7;, and the side D, hinged to the bottom and provided with the hinged ends E, whose lower edges rest between the cleats b b in the set-up position of the box, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
