Description
(NO MOaeL') P. T. POPOSKEY.
ADJUSTABLE PICTURE HANGER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP T. POPOSKEY, OF MILWAUKEE, IVISGONSIN.
ADJUSTABLE PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,980, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed April 16, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILLIP T. PoPosKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Adj usting Hanging Picture-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for adjusting hanging picture-frames and analogous articles.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, neat, easily-operated, and secure device whereby a picture having this device attached to its frame, but otherwise hung in the usual manner, may be readily adjusted at any time at such an angle as to secure the most desirable light or other desired effect.
My invention is more readily explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in \vhich Figure 1 is an end View of a picture-frame hung upon a wall by a cord through my device, which device is affixed to the frame and adjusted so as to give the picture a considerable inclination forward at the top from the the wall. Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. 1, eX- cepting that the device is so adjusted as to give the picture a much less forward inclination at the top from the wall. Fig. 3 isa longitudinal section of the sliding clasp or sleeve of my device, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same clasp or sleeve.
In the drawings, A is the side of the picture-frame. B is the wall or support on which the picture is hung. O is the picture cord or chain, supporting the picture in the usual manner.
My device consists of the bracket D, rigidly attached at its upper end to the upper part of the picture-frame on its rear by the screw it or other suitable means, and at its lower extremity preferably attached to the picture-frame by a screw-eye, 0, or other suit able means, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, though such attachment at the lower end is not essential to the device, and the clasp or sleeve E, which clasp is provided with spring 19 and lug r.
The clasp or sleeve E is made to clasp or encompass the bracket D, and is adapted to slide freely on said bracket, the spring 1) being affixed at its middle to the inner side of the clasp E, while the two free ends of said spring are adapted to press against and slide upon the bracket D, producing sufficient friction to cause the clasp to remain in position on the bracket, and yet to be easily moved upward or downward thereon. The lug r is provided with an aperture, 8. adapted for the reception and free movement of the supporting cord or chain therethrough.
It is obvious tha two of these devices being affixed to the back of a picture frame in the manner describedone on either sideand the ends of the supporting cord or chain being forced through the aperture 8 in lug 0' and made fast to the screw-eyes o and the frame hung upon the wall in the usual manner, any desired angle of the picture near to or away from a vertical position can be readily obtained by merely sliding the clasps E up or down on the bracket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The device for adjusting the inclination of hanging picture frames, consisting of a bracket rigidly affixed to the picture-frame, and a sliding clasp thereon, which clasp is provided with a friction-spring and an aperture for the reception and free movement therethrough of the picture-cord, in combination with the cord by which the frame is suspended, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of bracket D, affixed to .frame A, clasp E, provided with spring 1), and
lug 0*, having aperture 8, with. cord G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP T. POPQSKEY.
