SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,797, dated December 23, 1884.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP IIs'roR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,havc invented certain Improvements in Duplex Steam-Pumping Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to duplex pumps of that class of which the \Vorthington pump is an example; and in which the steam-valve of one pump derives its movement from the piston-rod of the other pump.
The object of my improvement is to provide such a pump with means whereby either pump can be run separately where it is not desired to run both pumps, and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective diagram of sniiicient of a duplex pumpiligengine .to illustrate my invention; and Figs. 2 and 3 transverse sections, partly in elevation, of parts of the mechanism.
A and A are the piston or plunger rods of the two pumps, the cylinders and barrels of which are arranged side by side, as usual 5 and B B are the valve-rods of the two engines.
The red A has a socket or cross-head, a, which is connected by a rod, 1), to a rocker, D, on a shaft, F; and the rod A has a similar socket or cross-head, a, connected by a rod, b, to a rocker, D, on a shaft, F. The valverod B is connected by a rod, (1, to an arm, f, on one end of a rock-shaft, G, the other end of which has a bell-crank lever, H, and the long arm of the latter has a pin, 9, to which is adapted the hooked upper end of a red, I, the lower end of which is connected to an arm, h, on the rocker-shaft, F. The valve-rod B is similarly connected by a rod, (1, to an arm, f, on a rock-shaft, G, the bell-crank lever H of which has a pin, for the reception of the hooked upper end of a rod, 1, the lower end of which is connected to an arm, h, on the rocker-shaft F. The lever H is broken away in Fig. 1, in order to show the upper end of the rod 1, but the two levers, H H, and their pins 9 g are shown in proper relation to each 50 other in Fig. 3. ment in eommonuse, whereby the pistonrod of one eiigine is caused to actuate the valverod of the other engine, the two engines being thus dependent one upon the other, so that neither can be run separately.
In carrying out my invention I mount upon any available part of the engineframing a steam-cylinder, J, the piston-rod j of which has a connecting-rod, K, hooked at the outer end for adaptation to a pin, in, the latter hav ()0 ing a tapered shank, m, which can be fitted to an opening in the short arm of either of the bell-crank levers H H, and secured in position by a nut, of, Fig. 8. The valve-stem k of the cylinder J has a pair of transverse 6 5 plates, 12, forming a socket for the reception of the short arms of a pair of bell-crank levers, M M, secured to a rod, s, carried by brackets s on the cylinder. Arms N N are loosely hung to the rods, and the arm N can be coupled to the lever M, or the other arm, N, to the levcr M by inserting a pin through an opening, 10, in the arm, and a similar opening in the arm t of the lever. The arm N is connected by a rod, 01:, to an arm, on the rocker-shaft F, and the arm N by a similar rod, 00, to an arm, y, on the rocker-shaft F. By the above arrangement either engine can be worked independently of the other, on first throwing the rods I I out of gear withrthe bell-crank levers H H. For instancc,when it is desired to work the engine of which A is the piston-rod, the arm N is locked to the arm I? of the lever M, (the arm N being disconnected from the lever M,) and the valve-stem 7; of the cylinder J is thus brought under control of the rocker-shaft F. The pin on being secured to the short arm of the lever H, the hooked end of the connectingrod K is adapted thereto, and the main valverod B is thus brought under control of the pis- 9o ton-rod j, so that the operation of the valve is controlled by its own engine. If the other engine is to be operated, the pin m is shifted to the lever H, the arm N is released from the lever M, and the arm N coupled to the le- 5 ver M.
To regulate the movement of the piston in the cylinder J, I use a governing-cylinder, P,
having a valved passage between the opposite ends, as usual, and filled with oil or other liquid, a piston in this cylinder having a rod,
j, connected to the rear projecting end of the piston-rodj.

Although I have shown special means for operating the valve-stem is from either rockershaft F F, and a special means of connecting the rod K to either of the shafts G G, my invention is not limited thereto, as those details may be modified in various ways without de- 2.- The combination of the shafts G G and 20 their levers H H withthe cylinder J, its piston-rod j and rod K, and the pin m, having a stem adapted to openings in either of the levers, as set forth.
