Be it known that I, ROBERT FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Earling, in the county of Shelby and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVeed-Outters; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make I and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to weed-cutters for cultivators; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts,as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.

The object of this invention is to provide a weed-cutter which can be secured to thestandard of a cultivator in place of the shovel, and when in this position can be operated to work on the surface of the ground or a little below it, to destroy the weed growth.

In the accompanying drawings, theletter A designates the loop-leg or standard of the cultivator, having a slot, B, through which pass the bolts G O, which are secured to the curved branch of the cutter.

1) represents the cutter, which is an acuteangle blade, consisting of the direct curved body portion E and the oblique'straight cutting portion F, the latter being a wing extending back obliquely and laterally from the acute-angle point G. The body portion E is curved upward and rearward from the point, to assimilate to the slope of the standard in its rear portion and to the level of the ground in its front or point portion. It is narrow, and its sides are parallel, as shown at h h,and it is provided near its upper end with the bolts 0 O, which pass through the standard and are secured by nuts N N on the back thereof. The straight obliquely-retreating cutter portion or sharpened wing F is also narrow, its rear edge, is, being parallel, or nearly so, to its cutting-edge m, to avoid undue friction and facilitate vibration, which is regarded as an important factor in producing an effective continuous cut. The plane of the cutter-wing is horizontal, or-nearly so, and tangent to the curve of the body portion at thepointportion. The depth and pitch of the cutter are regulated by means of the bolts 0 in the slot B and by the wedge-bearing Z, which is perforated to engage the lower bolt, 0, and is interposed between the loop and cutter-plate. The wedge Z is also provided on its rear side with longitudinal guide-flanges a a, to engage, respectively, the outer sides of the branches of the loop-leg B.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

The acute-angle weedcutter consisting of a single piece having the narrow upwardly and rearwardly curved portion or body E, carrying the fastening-bolts O, to engage the leg of a cultivator, and the oblique laterally-retreating narrow cutterwing F, having its fiat sides extending horizontally and tangent to the curve of the body at the point portion, substantially as specified.
