HOLDER FOR ARTBCLES Wl-HLE BEING HEATED.
BPZECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent Isle. 309fl02, dated December 16, 1884-.
Application (11rd February 23, IP84.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL FREDERICK Osca'n Nonnnv, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain improvements in Holders for Articles while being Heated, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for holding articles to be heated-cs shoemakers polishing-irons, for exampleover a burner. It is primarily designed for use in connection with gas-jets, and it comprises a means for securing a holder shelf or platform to its stem, whereby it may be readily detached, and a peculiarlyconstructed clamp for securing the stem to the gas bracket or pipe. The stem is also adapted to be screwed into a bench or table when a lamp is used for heating.
In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my holder and its clamp shown as secured to a gas-bracket. Fig. 2 is aplan of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear or edge view of the clamp. Fig. 4 is a front view of the upper end olthc stem, showing the tapered dovetail for attaching the platform. Fig. 5 illustrates the conslruction of the clamp, being a face view and a cross-section of one-half of the same. Fig. 6 illustrates the use of my holder with a lamp for heating.
ei'erring to Figs. 1 to 5, A represents a gas bracket or pipe, and 1-3 a burner-ti p on same. U is the stem of the holder, and .l) is the platform. This form of platform or shell? is designed especially to hold shoemakers polishing-irons. At its upper end the stem (1 is provided with a beveled or tapered dove tail, (1., which is arranged to engage a corresponding dovetail. recess at b in the edge oil). The dovetail a is inserted in the recess 1) from below, and when the platform is pressed down the taper of the dovetail causes it to lit snugly and hold the platform firmly. Platforms of different shapes and sizes may be used and one may be readily substituted for the other without removing the stem from the clamp. The clamp E is composed of two like disks, 0 c, which have raised flanges d. The disks are connected and the clamping effected by an (No model.)
axial thumb-screw, c, which passes through one disk and screws onto the other. Each disk has two oppositely-arranged V-shaped recesses, g, in its raised rim. In the recesses or notches g in one disk rests the gas pipe or bracket A, and in the recesses in the other disk rests the stem 0. By means of the screw 0 the disks are caused to clamp the stem and pipe together and hold them firmly. The stem and pipe do not cross the disks diametrically, as room must be left for the screw. The position of the clamping notches is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5. It will be seen that the stem 0 may be set at any angle with the gas-pipe that may be desired, and the stem may also be turned on its axis so as to bring either end of the platform over the gasjet. Vhere it is not convenient to use a gas-jet, the stem 0 may be screwed into a bench or board and a lamp be arranged under the platform, as illustrated in Fig. (3. To effect this the end of the stem is or may be provided with a screw, it. If the stem is not made of the proper metal for a screw, the screw 72- may be cast in it. It may in some cases be out directly on the stem, however. I
My clamp 10 may be employed for securing the stem or the holder to the gas-pipe when the stem is not made detachable from the platform, and I contemplate usin g it with holders of this character.
The stem C may be of any length, and the parts may be made of any suitable material. The gaspipe A may pass through the clamp below the screw 0 or above it. In Figs. 1 and 3 it is shown as passing above the screw.
I am aware that a bracket for supporting an article to be heated has been secured removably to a vertical wall by means of a keyhole in the ljn'acketplate, arranged to engage a headed pin or tack driven in the wall; and I am also aware that a reflector has been provided with a tongue to engage keepers in a fixed part, to form a securing device for said reflector. These constructions I do not claim, as they are very old and have been applied in numerous ways. My construction differs materially from these. I employatapered dovetail recess in the platform, and a tapered dovetail on the holder, which wedges tightly 100 claim- 1.. In a holder for the purposes described, the combination of the platform D, provided with a tapered dovetail recess at b, and the stem 0, provided with a tapered dovetail a to fit the recess in the platform, and means, substantially as described, for securing the stern in its proper position with respect to the burner, substantially as set forth.
2. In a holder for the purposes described, the combination, with the stem and platform, ofthe clamp E, for securing the stem of the holder to a gas-pipe, constructed substantially as'herein set forth.
3. In a holder for the purposes described,
the combination of the platform provided with a tapered dovetail recess, the stem provided with a tapered dovetail to fit and wedge into said recess in the platform, and the clamp, constructed substantially as described, for securing the stem in position with respect to the burner, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the clamp E, of the platform D, provided with atapered dovetail recess, and the'steni 0, provided with a tapered dovetail-constructed to fit and wedge into said recess, and with a screw, h, whereby the stern may, if desired, be screwed into a bench or board, as set forth. Y
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
