F. H. PERRY.
'CARTRIDGE LOADER.
Patented Deo. 9. 1884.
llnirnn drafrns Parleur @rrrcno FRED H. PERRY, 0F IWIONTPELIER, VERMONT.
CARTRIDGE-LOADER.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 309,088, dated December 9, 1884.
Application iiled July 10,1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED H. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Vashington and State of "Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Loaders and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and .to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a top View of my device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to chargers for measuring powder and shot and reloading cartridges for small arms; and it. consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a frame or body which is provided with the laterally-projecting upper and lower arms, C and I), which are adapted to embrace the edge of a table.
E represents a thumb-screw which engages a threaded bearing, F, in one of the arms, and is adapted to bite the edge of the table and form with said arms a seam-clamp, whereby the device may be fixed in position for use.
The upper arm, C, is provided with a barrel, G, which is formed with a perforated lug or catch, a.
The upper portion, II, of the body projects outward from the clamp portion and terminates in a vertical cylindrical chamber, K, which is horizontally slotted in front and rear at b and c for the passage of the upper cutoff slide-plate, L.
Guard-lugs d d, projecting from the front of the cylinder horizontally, serve to inclose and protect the end of the cut-off plate when it is pushed through the cylinder.
rIhe cut-off plate L is provided with an aperture, c, of diameter equal to that of the cylinder, the position of this aperture being near the front end of the plate.
The lower portion of the cylinder K is made,
(No model.)
preferably,of a little larger diameter than the upper part or mouth, and forms a bearing for the inner adjustable cylinder, M, which is inserted therein from below upward. This inner slide-cylinder is slotted in front and rear. as indicated at g g, to receive the lower cutoff' plate, P, which is provided with a stop, 7L, at its front end, and with an aperture, L, near its rear end. The inner cylinder is, also, provided at its lower end with a laterally-proje`ct ing horizontally ilattened lug, I, which is notched at i in the end to engage the notched edge or marginal rack n of the clamp portion, this rack edge extending centrally, as shown. An offset or projection, p, of the notchl serves to engage one of the notches of the rack when the inner cylinder has been adjusted up or down to proper position for the charge required.
The capacity of the charge-chamber is lessened by moving the inner cylinder upward, and is rendered greater by drawing it downward from the fixed cylinder K. The cut-oft` P moves up or down with the cylinder N on the arm S.
A limiting-stop is indicated at m. This is usually a pin, which can be withdrawn.
S indicates an arm, of wire, which is bent transversely at t to connect the pivot portion c to the downwardly-extending end portion, e, which passes through end perforations, f, in the cutoff plates L and P. The pivot portion fu of this arm is seated in the barrel or bearing G, in which it turns, and a spring, J, fastened at a, is coiled around the pivot portion c, and its tension is so arranged that its power will be exerted to draw the arm rearward, or from the charging-cylinder. The gateslides or cutoff plates are, therefore, also drawn to the rear, and in this position the opening in the upper plate registers with the mouth of the cylinder K, while the lower end of the slide-cylinder is closed by the imperforate portion of the lower plate.
A funnel, Z, is usually provided for convenience in connection with this device.
To operate the charger, place the funnel in the cylinder-mouth and fill the funnel with the powder or shot, as the case may be. Adjust the inner cylinder for the desired charge. Holding the cartridge to be filled under the projecting end of the lower cylinder, press the IOO wire arm toward the charging-chamber. This moves the slide-plates, cutting off' the charge above, and opening by the aperture in the lower plate a passage for the powder or shot downward into the cartridge. When the pressure is removed from the wire ar1n,it liies back,
drawing with it the slides, cutting olf the way` consisting of the frame A, having the chargecylinder, clalnp-arms, and-spring-arm holder formed thereon, and the upper portion of the said cylinder provided with a transverse slot for the passage of the cut-off slide, the springvarm having one of its vertical branches seated in the said bearing, and its opposite vertical branch passing through the outer ends of the respective slides, the lower adjustable cylinder sliding vertically within the charge-cylinder, and provided with the horizontal lug having notches adapted to engage the notches of the main frame, and a set-screw for securing the whole to a tableedge, substantially as specified.
Intestimony whereof I alix my signature in I presence of two witnesses.
