Be it known that I, EDWIN L. YEWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Books, of which the following is aspecification,reierence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in memorandum-books; and it has for its objects to provide a cheap and simple device for holding the covers of the book together, and to hold any number of pages together, so that any page may be turned to im- 1 5 mediately after opening the book. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a memorandum-book having my device attached 2o thereto. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same, showing the elastic bands in section; and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of my improved elastic band.

The letter A in the drawings indicates a 2 5 memorandumbook of the usual construction, having covers B and 0, between which are secured the usual blank leaves. Secured to one of the covers is a loop, D, of suitable material, through which is passed the elastic split band E, the inner part of the band E being for the purpose of holding a place in the book, so that it may be turned to immediately after opening said book, and the outer part of the band being for the purpose of holding the covers or the book itself together, as shown plainly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The elastic band can be secured, however, in any desired manner.

The advantage of my device over the old way, where one band is used, is that when a 0 person has made an entry and wishes to keep the place, so that it can be turned to as soon as the book is opened, the inner part of the band E is inserted over the proper page,holding it to the cover, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and when the book is closed the remaining portion of the band is extended around the outside of the covers and the book itself, holding the whole together.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The new article of manufacture herein described,consisting of an elastic band formed of one piece, split and adapted to serve the purpose specified.

2. The combination of an elastic split band with a book, substantially as described.
