rr r TATES ATET FFIQEO CARLTON FOSTER, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIV.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,?845, dated November 25, 1884-.
Application filed April 14, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARLTON FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of WVinnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SparkArresters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of this invention are, first, to obtain greater security against the destruction of property by fire accruing from sparks emanating from steam-boiler furnaces, by preventing their passage through, and burning the same thoroughly within, the furnace-walls; and, secondly, to obtain an increased utilization of the fire in the production of steam. These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in all the views.
' Figure l is a side view, partly in section, representing the application of my improve ment and the practical operation thereof. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, partly in section.
A (0 represent the furnace-wall or fire-box having an inside upward inclination toward the rear end thereof, which is provided with a recess, B B, rearward of a transverse cylinder or shell, 0, made of boiler-iron, and connected to one or more boilers, D, by steampressureequalizing pipe E, steam-drum F, and stand-pipe G, and also by water-pipes H, mud-drum J, and stand-pipes K. The cylinder G, by reason of its connection with the boilers D through the pipes H, mud-drum, and stand-pipes, will be supplied with water to the same level as thatin theboilers D. As the products of combustion pass along the draftcourse indicated by the arrows 1 and 2 the sparks will obtaina measure of momentum from thevelocity of the draft which will cause them to enter the recess B between the cylinder G and the rear end of the furnace-wall, as indicated by the arrow 3, after which they will fall into a receptacle, B, where they will be entirely consumed by the heat of the furnace. By reason of the return-draft the heat and smoke will move on through the fines d to the front end of the boiler and pass out through the smoke-stack d. The velocity of the draft will cause the heat to effectively impinge the transverse shell or cylinder 0 at the rear of the boilers, where the heat is most effective, and an increased production of steam will re sult therefrom. The smoke-stack d does not need, and must not be encumbered with, a wire screen or any other obstruction, but must be left entirely open from top to bottom.
Having explained the construction and operation of myimprovement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a boiler-furnace, of a fire-box or walls, A, a boiler arranged longitudinally therein, and having the fire-grate located under its front portion, a draft-passage extending rearwardly beneath said boiler,a cylinder, 0, located transversely at the rear end of the boiler and communicating therewith above and below the same, a recess, B, formed in the rear wall adjacent to said cylinder, and a recess, B, beneath said recess B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARLTON FOSTER.
