CAR-DOOR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,796, dated November 11,1884.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. PETERSON, of Wyandotte, in the .county of Vyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Car-Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows the front elevation of a freight-car door with my improved fastenings attached and the door sealed.' Fig. 2 shows the same with the door open. Fig. 3 is a section throughx x of Fig. 1. r Fig. 4 are details to be referred to.
My invention relates to that class of fast enings which are used on freight-cars that require to be fastened during transportation; and it consists of the combinationof devices, as hereinafter explained and claimed, and is an improvement on Patent No. 293,593, issued to me, assignor of one-halfto William C. Duvall, February 12, 1884.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the side of a freight-car provided with the door B, hung 0 on ways, and caused to slide in the usual wellknown manner. In the side of the car and flush therewith I secure the metal plate 0.
The metal plate 0 is recessed, the rear side of the recess being on a line flush with the edge of the door, as shown in Fig. 1. Within this recess is pivoted the block D, adapted to drop into and snugly fill the recess, except at its lower end, at which a space is left for conveniently enabling a person in charge to raise the pivoted block to secure the door of the car. Through the lower or free end of the block D is made a slotted opening, (I, to receive the key E, which is made wed geshaped, so as to fill the slot d, and by passing down to +5 compensate for any wear of the key, and
which [also tends to crowd the door against the car and prevent sparks or water from eutering the car between the side and the door. The lower end of the key E is perforated to receive the usual seal applied to freight-ear 5o fastenings. It is evident that the seal might be applied directly to the block D, and thus secure the hasp in place; but the friction of the hasp, caused by the shaking of the cars, would have a tendency to damage the seal if not to destroy it altogether; but when the seal is attached to the lower end of the key E it is clear that the seal is free from all such danger. I secure the key to the door by a chain or other convenient means.
The hasp F is slotted so as to fit snugly over the free end of the block D when it is thrown out at right angles from the body of the car, as shown in Fig. 1.
The rear of the door is provided with pins G G, which fit into perforations made in the vertical bar H, against which the door slides when closed. These pins add materially to the strength of the door, and tend to resist any outward pressure.
The operation of my improved fastening is as follows: The door having been closed. the block D is thrown out at right angles to the side of car, and the hasp F is placed in position over the end of the block, when the key E is dropped into position and secured by a seal in any of the well-known ways.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The door B, having the pins G, and the bar H, provided with recesses, in combination with the hasp F, the plate 0, provided with an inclined'recess adapted to receive the block D, pivoted horizontally within said recess, the said block having an elongated slot to receive thekey E, all combined and arranged to 0p w erate as and for the purpose set forth.
