To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LINCOLN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Door-Lock Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to improve the operation of sliding-door-lock handles; and it consists in the arrangements and com binations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a side View of a lock showing the handle 2 5 or pull pressed back into the lock-case. Fig. 2 is a front view of the lock-case; and Fig. 3, a second side view of said case, showing a finger-piece repressed and the pull thrown out to receive the hand.
In said drawings, a is the lock-case having a perforated faceplate, a, in which the han- 'dle end of the pull cand a push-piece, d, have bearings. Said pull has a slotted shank, 0, carried by a 1ug,f, and is provided with a pin, g. Below the pull is arranged the push-piece d, having at one end a bearing in the faceplate, and at the other resting on a lug or projection, h. The back or inward action of said piece is limited by the stop-lug z. The push- 0 piece and pull are connected by a lever, j, fulcrumed near the push-piece on the lock-case so that a slight inward movement of the push throws the pull outward a considerable dis tance. -At a point between the bearing ex- 5 tremities of the lever adjacent to the fulcrum thereof the said lever is notched or otherwise formed to receive a spring, m, which latter is secured between the said lever and the side of the case. The spring is adapted to bear alternately on both the pull and push-piecethat is to say, a short repression of either of the last said parts throws the spring past the fulcrumal center, after which it acts to throw the other of said parts outward and to hold the same in that position until it is again thrown back by the hand. The latter part of the outward movement of the pull being caused especially by the spring, said pull is thrown out the full length of the handle with sufficient energy, but not with such undue force as to injure the hand should the latter be hit accidentally by ita feature of improvement over similar devices heretofore in use having the spring bear directly against theshank of the push-piece. The spring not only continues 6 the outward movement of the push, but also the inward movement thereof, as will be evident. Said spring also holds the pull in its outward position, preventing an automatic inward movement such as is occasioned in 73 other locks where the lever is weighted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is l. The improved sliding-door lock having the pull 0, provided with pin 9, the slotted lever j, pivoted to the lock-casing and engaging with said pin, the push-piece d, against which the shorter arm of the lever j bears, and the spring m, bearing against the lever 3' above or below the fulcrum of the latter, according as the pull is within or without the lock-casing, substantially as described.
2. The improved sliding-door lock having the pull 6 and push-piece d, the intermediate throwingieverj, pivoted to the lock-casing, and haying an extension immediately to the rear of said pivot, and a spring, at, bearing against such extension, substantially as shown and described.
