` BUTTON PASTBNER. .Nol 307,218. Patented Oct. 28, 18-84.

W MS @#M UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. OTIS, OF` SHELTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNCR OF CNE-HALF TO ANDREV E. BURKE, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,218, dated October 28, 1884.
Y Application filed Marel] 12, 1R94. (No model.)
To cl/Z wwm it ntcty concern,.-
Be it known that l, CHARLES H. Oris, of Shelton, county of Fairfield and State of Con` necticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof.
My inv ent-ion relates to improvements in button-fasteners; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the blank, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener bent into form and having` the button-eye secured in the manner hereinafter described.
The blank or fastener A is made in the form shown in Fig. l, being stamped or out from a suitable metallic plate. Its upper portion is formed with the two hooks, A A', extended in the same direction, as shown, so that when the blank is folded on the dotted Aline 1 the opening A2 of the hooks A A will not coincide. The lower portion of the blank is formed with the wings b b.
The dotted line 2 marks the division be tween what, for convenience of reference,I call the upper7 and lower 7 portion of the blank.
In operation' the eye B of the button is slipped on the hook A well down. The blank is then folded on line 1, bringing the hook A flat over against hook A, and forming with said hook practically a continuous ring holding the button. The wings b now lie close togethelgand are inserted through aslit cut in the shoe-iiap to the line marked 2, when they 4o are bent in opposite directions to a line at right angles to the hooks'A A', as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The fastening is now firmly secured to the shoe, as will be understood, and the operation may be performed by hand without requiring a machine for the applica tion of the fastener.
Vhile l prefer to use the wings -b b, as shown, and to form the blank therewith, it is obvious that the blank having two hooks, as 5o described, could be employed with various different means of securing to the shoe. For instance, prongs might be formed on the lower portion of the blank and adapted to be forced into t-he shoe and retain the blank in place.
My invention is alike applicable to gloves, clothing, shoes, and like articles.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters 6ol Patent, s-
A button-fastener cut from a plate of metal and provided with the hooks A A and the retaining- Wings ZJ Z1, arranged and adapted for use substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l append my signature.
CHARLES H. OTIS.
