PATENT OFFIcE.
MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,059, dated October 21, 1884. Application filed July 15, 1884. (No model.)
T0 (1, 1071,0112, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JOSEPH LYNCH, of Milford, in the county of Worcester, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes or Boots and in the Lasts used in their Manufacture; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, which denotes a transverse section of a shoe at its heel and its last with my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
My improvement is not only to prevent running down or aside of the shoe or boot upper, especially at the heel, but the wearing away of the heel or sole unevenly or at one side of it more than the other, as generally takes place with bow-legged and various other persons in walking.
In preparing a last for the making of a boot or shoe in accordance with my invention I fix upon the bottom of such last, at one edge thereof, a piece or strip of wood, leather, or other suitable material wedgeshaped in transverse section, such piece being shown at a as arranged on the bottom of the lastAat its in and having its thinner edge at or near the middle of the last. Such strip is to be extended from the back of the heel forward upon the said heel to the front thereof, or from such toward the toe a suitable distance. In lasting the shoe the said strip a will cause the insole b to incline transversely of it, as shown, and render it necessary to 'make such insole wedgeshaped crosswise of it, or to have, when it is made in the usual way, of even thickness, or about so, except, perhaps, at its edge, an auxiliary wedge-shaped re-enforce, 0, applied to it on its outer side, as exhibited. The said re-enforce is placed underneath the higher half of the insole in manner as represented, and is to taper crosswise sufficiently to form a proper bearing for the outer sole in order for that to have its due relation to the median vertical plane of the shoe. The last and its insole having been thus prepared, the upper is to be lasted upon them, and the outer sole, B, is to be applied and fastened to the upper and insole in any well-known manner, after which the heel G is to be secured in the usual way to the outer sole. After removal of the last from the shoe or boot such shoe or boot will be found to have the upper surface of the insole thereof declining transversely toward the inner side of the shoe and not essentially parallel with but inclined relatively to the treadsurface or bot-tom of the outer sole or heel, whereby when the shoe or boot may be in wear the foot therein of the wearer will have its tendency to run the upper down at the outer side of the heel counteracted by the foot in pressing downward being forced more or less inward by the inclined insole.
I claim- I11 a boot or shoe, the insole or the heel portion thereof inclined transversely, so as to be higher at its outer than it is at its inner edge, in combination with a wedge-shaped re-en force arranged between the outer surface of such insole and the inner surface of the outer sole, and having its thinner edge at or near the middle of the insole, all being substantially as represented.
THOMAS JOSEPH LYNCH.
