SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,767, dated October 21, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM H. NIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Atomizers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an atomizer for moistening tobacco by ejecting on the same a very fine spray of water or other fluid suitable for curing the same.
The device may be used for spraying any substance or body.
The invention consists of a cylindrical case with an opening in the top, with a pipe-connection for attachment to a pump at one end,
a nozzle inside at the same end, and a wiregauze covering the opposite end, with pipe 5 and basin for drainage.
The mechanical construction is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a top view of the atomizer. Fig. II is the gauze thimble. Fig. III is a longitudinal section of the atomizer.

A is a cylindrical brass case, having an opening in the top through which the nozzle 0 maybe handled. Theleft end is closed with the part I, and to the outer end is screwed the pipe B, and to the inner end is screwed the nozzle. Nozzles are used with orifices of varying diameter. The finer the spray is required to be the less the orifice.
II is a thimble, which may be slipped into the case, or it may be screwed into the same. 011 the inner edge of this thimble is soldered gauze-wire G. (See Fig. II.) The curved pipe D is attached at both ends of the case at its bottom. The basin E is soldered to the righthand end of this pipe, the same having an orisaid pipe. The use of this basin is to catch any water which may fall outside of the thimble. ()n the pipe is a nipple to which is at tached the flexible pipe F. This device is used to convey the water which is not ejected in spray back to the source of supply, and may be modified in construction. When water is used with the atomizer, the source may be from city'water works, force or rotary pumps, and the connections therewith maybe by rigid or flexible pipes. spray is modified by the'wire-gauze as well as by the fineness of the stream through the nozzle. Therefore to produce the finest spray a finer gauze is used.
The operation is thus: The tobacco to be moistened is placed in a box. The water which i is forced through the nozzle strikes the wiregauze, producing a fine spray which falls up f on the tobacco, thus moistening the same with ,1 the greatest uniformity.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The atomizer herein described, comprising the open-top ease, the detachable nozzle, which can be removed through the said top, the inlet-pipe, and the removable thimble carrying the wire-gauze located at the end of the a case opposite the nozzle, substantially as described.
2. The atomizer herein described, consist 1 ing of the open case A, having a nozzle at one end and a gauze thimble at the other, and provided with inlet-pipe B, drainage-pipes D F, and basin E, substantially as set forth.
