To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HARVEY RCRAWFORD, of Brockton, county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boots and Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

My invention has for its object the production of a shoe which, while possessing the advantages of a Congress gaiter, may also be opened at the side after the manner of alaced shoe for the insertion of the foot, the construction being such that, after securing the quarter-top flaps together at the front of the shoe by suit-able fastenings, the back part of the quartertop is free to yield to the ankle in walking.

In accordance with my invention the quarter-top will be composed, preferably, entirely of elastic goring or fabric, as shown by full lines, to the front edges of which goring or fabric are attached the quarter-top flaps, which latter extend across the top of the ankle and are united or held together by means of strings, buttons, clasps, buckles, or other suitable fastenings. As herein shown, the quarter top flaps are connected with only a portion of r the edge of the elastic goring or fabric quartor-top, and that portion of the front edge of the said goring which is not attached to the quarter-top flap is stitched to the vamp-top, as will be described.

Figure l in side elevation represents one of my improved shoes with the quarter-top flaps united; and Fig. 2 represents a part only of the saidshoe in perspective, the quarter-top flap and upper portion of the vamp-top being turned outward or over to better disclose the construction of the same.

The vamp 1*, quarter q, and sole 8 are and may be of usual construction. The remaining portion of the shoe or its top is composed ofwhatlshall denominate the quarter-top a, preferably entirely of elastic goring or indiarubber or elastic fabric stitched to the quarter at 3. The edges of the elastic goring at the heel of the boot or shoe are united together by a stay-piece, to which is attacheda pulling-on strap. If desired, the quarter-top flaps 0 may be cut longer, as shown by dotted lines h, Fig. 1, and be connected with the front edge of the quarter-top adown to the quarter at 7f.

A shoe such as described may be opened, as in Fig. 2, for the reception of the foot, and the quarter-top flaps may be united to enable the top of the shoe to be drawn about or fitted more or less closely to the ankle, as may be desired, and thereafter the elastic goring of the quarter-top stretches to accommodate the top of the shoe to the movement of the ankle or the motion of the foot in walking.

If desired, the quarter-top a may be composed of leather and have a strip of cloth goring stitched into it, as shown by dotted lines.
