Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL P. PATTEN, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, ANI) S. A. NICKERSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
CAPSTAN-WINDLASS.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 30,607, dated November 6, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. PATTEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Capstan-Windlasses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a capstan windlass with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
My invention consists in combining the capstan Vwith the barrel of the windlass by means of a worniwheel on the barrel of the windlass and an endless screw on a central shaft which is so iitted to and combined with the capstan, and so furnished with a pawl rim and stops that the capstan may either be employed to work the windlass, in which operation it gives a very powerful purchase, or may be employed independently of the windlass, in those operations in which capstans are commonly used on board ships.
To enable others to make and use my in vention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the main deck, and B, the upper deck.
C, C, are the main bitts, containing the bearings for the ournals of the barrel D, of the windlass.
H, H, are the pawl-bitts, to which are attached the two pawls a, ct.
E, E, are the ratchets of the windlass arranged on opposite sides of the wormwheel F, which occupies a position on the windlass midway between the ends thereof. This worm-wheel and the two ratchets E, E, may be composed of a single casting, as all must be firmly secured to the barrel D.
G is the upright sha ft of the capstan, fitted to a step bearing o, secured to the deck A, and also fitted to a bearing in the upper deck B, through which it passes.
L is the endless screw which gears with the worm-wheel E, of the windlass barrel. This screw has a square central hole which lits to a squared portion, being just small enough to pass through the bearing in the upper deck B.
I is the pawl rim of the capstan. This is not permanently secured to the deck, as is usual, but is fitted to a square on the shaft Gr, or otherwise secured to the said shaft to turn with it. It has in its periphery a series of recesses cl, d, to receive the end or ends of one or more sliding bolts or stops K, which are secured to the deck, and which serve to lock the pawl rim to the deck when desired and so prevent the rotation of the shaft G. J is the barrel of the capstan fitted to the shaft Gr, in such manner as to be capable of turning freely upon it. o, c are the capstan pawls, capable of being set to work in either direction in the pawl-rim I.
Then it is desired to work the windlass the bolt or bolts K, are to be withdrawn from the pawl rim I, and the pawls c, c, set in such direction on the rim as to permit the capstan to turn the said rim, and with it the shaft Gr, and endless screw L, in such a direction that the endless screw will turn the windlass barrel in the proper direction. 1When it is desired to work the capstan only, the pawl rim I, is to be locked by the stop or stops K. The locking of this rim locks the shaft Gr, and endless screw L, also, and permits the capstan to be turned in either' direction according to the way in which the pawls o, c, are set, thus permitting it to be used independently of the windlass in such operations in which such use may be desirable.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Combining the capstan with the barrel of the windlass by means of a worm wheel F, on the said barrel, and an endless screw L, on a shaft G, which has the capstan barrel QI, and pawl rim I, fitted to it, substantially as described, the so fitted pawl rim being furnished with one or more movable stops K, to permit the operation in either of the modes herein specified.
SAMUEL P. PATTEN.
