IIIIIIIIIIIII) III/I v//////////////////////////////// f/l'I/I/ United rates Patent @fifice 3,059,820 Patented Oct. 23, 1962 3,059,820 BOX FOR HOLDEN G AND DELEVERING PAfiTY SUBSTANCES Josef Gabler, Mainausirasse 44, Zurich 8, Switzerland Filed July 12, 1960, Ser. No. 42,273 3 Claims. (Cl. 222-340) The present invention relates to a box for holding and delivering pasty substances such as, for example, cosmetic or medical pastes or salves or the like.
Boxes for this purpose are known, with the bottom of the box carried rotatable on the peripheral wall of the box and with a piston crown coupled to this bottom by a leaf spring and adjustable along the peripheral wall of the box, which wall is provided with an internal screw thread. Thereby, between the bottom of the box and the piston crown, a coupling device is arranged which transmits the rotation of the bottom of the box to the piston crown.
According to the invention, the leaf spring is constructed as a strip bent in the form of an arc and extending over a diameter of the box, and the bottom of the box or the piston crown is provided with means for holding the middle portion of the leaf spring and with a groove for taking the free ends of the leaf spring, and extending over a diameter of the box.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one example of execution of a box according to the invention, where:
FIG. 1 shows a side view of the box, partly in section,
FIG. 2 a view looking down on FIG. 1, with portions broken away, and
FIGS. 3 and 4 each shows a detail-variant of the box in sectional elevation through a middle portion of the box.
The box illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 has the peripheral wall 1 and the bottom which consists of parts 2 and 2' connected to each other after being assembled together, and carried rotatable on a flange 1 directed inwards. The inside of the peripheral wall of the box is provided with an internal screw thread 3, into which is screwed the lid 4 of the box. This lid has an outlet opening 5 in the centre, and the box can be closed by a slip-on cover 6.
A piston crown 7 is screwed in the thread 3 and carries on its underside an oblong prominence 8.
The part 2 of the bottom of the box has two radial grooves 9 on a projection directed towards the inside of the box.
Between the part 2 of the bottom of the box and the piston crown 7, a leaf spring is arranged for coupling them to each other, this spring running in the shape of an arc having a radius of curvature between this bottom part 2' and the piston crown 7. The middle portion of the spring 10 has an aperture in which the projection 8 engages. The two ends of the spring rest in the radial grooves 9 in the part 2, these grooves acting as guides for the ends.
When the bottom 2, 2' of the box is turned, the leaf spring 10 carries the piston crown 7 along with it, so that this crown, depending on the direction of turning, screws upwards or downwards in the thread 3 when the peripheral wall 1 is held stationary.
Thereby the pasty substance is forced out through the opening 5, or any superfluous amount that is forced out is sucked back.
As shown in FIG. 3, a leaf spring 10 can be inserted with its middle portion also into an arcuate groove 11 in the centre of the underside of the piston crown 7.
According to FIG. 4, a leaf spring 10 can be inserted,
with its middle portion direct downwards, in a groove 11 in the centre of the part 2' of the bottom of the box, whilst radially running grooves 9' are provided on the underside of the piston crown 7 as guides for the free ends of the leaf spring 10".
On the inside of the cover 6 a plug can be fitted at the centre, this plug closing the outlet opening tight when the cover is put onto the box.
What I claim is:
1. A box for holding and delivering pasty substances comprising: a cylindrical wall having oppositely disposed ends and internal screw threads extending axially therebetween; a top fixedly mounted in one of said ends, said top having a center hole for the delivery of pasty substance therethrough; a bottom member rotatably mounted on the other of said ends; a piston crown member peripherally threaded to engage with the internal screw thread of said wall, and, when so engaged, defining a containing space with said top and wall that is variable by rotation for forcing a pasty substance contained in said space out of said hole; an arcuately shaped leaf spring, having opposite ends and a middle portion, mounted between said bottom member and piston crown member with both said spring ends engaging one of said members, and the middle portion of said spring engaging the other of said members; engaging means respectively defined by said bottom member and piston crown member, one said engaging means rigidly engaging both said spring ends for rotation of said spring about a common center and leaving said spring ends free to slide radially with respect to said common center of rotation, and the other said means engaging the middle portion of said spring for rotation with said spring about said common center, said engaging means and arcuate spring cooperating to couple said bottom member and piston crown member rigidly with respect to relative rotation and flexibly with respect to relative axial movement.
2. A box for holding and delivering pasty substances as described in claim 1 characterized in that said engaging means respectively defined by said bottom and piston crown members comprises diametrically extending groove means defined in said bottom member for engaging said opposite ends of said arcuate leaf spring and an oblong projection in said crown piston member extending axially toward said bottom member, said projection being shaped complementary to an oblong hole defined in the middle portion of said leaf spring.
3. A box for holding and delivering pasty substances as described in claim 1 characterized in that. said engaging means respectively defined by said bottom and crown piston members comprises groove means extending diametrically in said bottom member for engaging said opposite ends of said arcuate leaf spring, and a groove extending diametrically and being arcuate in depth in said crown piston member, said groove being shaped complementary to said middle portion of said leaf spring to engage said spring therein.
