United States Patent 3,059,357 SCARIFYING BLADE FOR ROAD BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION MACHINE Warren B. Irish, Bucyrus, Ohio, assignor to Shank Manufacturing Company, a partnership Filed May 5, 1955, Ser. No. 506,169 1 Claim. (Cl. 37-145) My invention relates to scarifying blades and relates more particularly to blades of this character attached to equipment for use in road building and construction operation.
It is an object of my invention to provide a blade of the type referred to which will have an improved penetrating action.
Another object of my invention is to provide a blade of the type referred to wherein a machine bowl to which the same is attached will be filled more rapidly, reducing the travel necessary for the machine to fill the bowl, and attaining speedier removal of the partly pulverized road surface particles.
A further object of my invention is to provide a toothed blade of the type referred to having a novel arrangement of teeth resulting in improved suction and fragmentation, the teeth operating in some respects similarly to tire grooves.
Another object of my invention is to provide a blade of the character referred to which will break up and pulverize material entering the bowl of a road building machine of the type designed as carryalls, pans, scoops etc. to which said blade is attached thus permitting more even distribution of the load during dumping operations and faster compacting of the material in the case of fills.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a blade of the type referred to which may be readily mounted and detached from the usual tractor drawn carryalls, pans, scoops, etc. and which will reduce the horsepower requirements necessary for the said machines for filling or removing dirt.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an improved scarifying blade of the type referred to which is composed of but few parts, will be economical in manufacture, and highly eflicient in use.
These and other objects of my invention will become more readily apparent by reference to the accompanying description and drawings, in which drawings:
FIG. 1 is a view of a tractor drawn carryall, the improved blade of an embodiment of my invention being shown secured to the forward edge of the bottom thereof;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of blade of FIGURE 1;
FIG. 3 is an end elevational view of the blade of FIGURE 1;
FIG. 4 is a view of a portion of the blade of FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, and of its operating relationship to the road surface, the direction of travel of the blade thereof indicated by the arrow;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in

3,059,357 Patented Oct. 23, 1 962 all of which like reference parts are designated by like reference characters, at 10 I show the improved blade of my invention, preferably having its front face tapered or straight, as shown. The same might be concaved or curved in a transverse plane for material lifting purposes, if this be desired, although it is preferred that the front face be straight as shown. The lower or working edge of the blade is preferably beveled at its rear side, as at 11, to provide a sharpened cutting or scraping edge.
The longitudinal center of the blade is provided with a plurality of spaced aligned openings 12 and receives bolts or securing means 13 to attach the blade to road building and construction equipment or, as shown in FIG. 1, to the bottom portion of the carryall 14. The lower or working edge of the blade is provided throughout its length with a plurality of downwardly extending teeth 16, preferably evenly spaced, with the spacing width substantially tooth width.
The upper edge of the form of my invention, shown in FIGS. 14 inclusive, is also provided with teeth 16, similar to and aligned with teeth 16 for the purpose of assisting in further pulverizing and compacting material for dumping and filling.
It will be noted that the blades 10 and 10' in both forms shown is horizontally disposed alongside the bottom of the carryall which acts as a blade base as at 17, secured by means of the bolts 13 thereto, and, as best shown in FIG. 4, is disposed at an oblique angle to the direction of travel, the teeth being disposed at an angle substantially less than degrees to the plane of the road surface.
When the blade is lowered, by lowering of the pan adjacent to the road surface, the teeth being disposed at an angle to the ground penetrate the same readily, tearing up the ground and because of the grooved patterns of the ground feed into the pan substantially equal portions of broken up surface material and the pan fills therefore much more quickly than in conventional type carryalls and greatly varying chunks of material are eliminated.
Should the teeth be damaged in any way during work, the blade is easily removed with a minimum loss of time involved in the operation of removal and replacement.
It will be understood that the bolts or securing means 13 which attach the blade to the pan, or a part thereof, are projected through evenly spaced aligned openings along the bottom of the carryall 14 at 17.
In the form of my invention shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 the blade 10' is provided with but a lower saw-tooth edge and the upper edge 18 thereof is preferably beveled as shown at 19.
Although I have described my invention in connection with an improved embodiment thereof, I am aware that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefrom, without, however, departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A scarifying blade of the class described mounted to and forming a parallel extension of the leading edge portion of the bottom of a material-carrying container and being horizontally disposed to a road surface substantially perpendicular to the lines of scarifying movement thereof, said blade having at its lower edge a plurality of beveled teeth and being disposed at an angle substantially less than 90 to the plane of the road surface to pulverize said material and having at its upper edge a plurality of oppositely facing, similarly beveled teeth, the bevels of which are disposed in intersecting relation to the plane of said leading edge portion and providing inclined planes over which said material passes and directly contacts before entering said container to further pulverize said material, said inclined planes being substantially parallel to the bevels of said first mentioned teeth.
