TIE HOLDER AND SAFETY PIN Filed NOV. 24, 1959 F IG. 2

United States Patent i 3,059,298 TIE HOLDER AND SAFETY PIN Walter H. Stenby, 98 Riverside Drive, New York 24, NY. Filed Nov. 24, 1959, Ser. No. 855,179 1 Claim. (Cl. 2449) The present invention relates to safety pins, and more particularly to a tie holder for attaching a tie to a shirt in such a manner that the device is not visible when worn, and is hidden from view by the tie, although the tie is securely held in a desired position.
There are three types of tie holders known. One type is a clamping device for clamping the tie and a front panel of the shirt between two clamping members. The second type is a tack or needle perforating the tie and the shirt, and generally provided with some decorative element appearing on front of the tie. The third type includes a clamping means attached to the shirt, and a chain secured to the clamping means and surrounding the tie to hold the same in place.
All tie holders according to the prior art have in common that a part thereof is located in front of the tie, covers part of the front surface of the tie, and is in full view when the tie is worn. This visible portion of the tie holder is embellished by wide variety of ornamental designs.
However, a great many men find the decorative function of tie holders to be extremely undesirable and in bad taste. While they consider the original function of the tie holder to be desirable or necessary, they do not wish to wear decorative metal parts in front of their tie.
Particularly, the clamp type tie holder, and the chain type tie holder require rather large parts to be located in front of the tie. The clamp type tie holder requires a front part extending from the edge of a tie beyond its center in order to permit clamping to the front panel of the shirt which is located behind the center of a tie. The chain type tie holder requires a chain extending across the entire front surface of a tie.
The tack type tie holder may have a smaller visible part, which is frequently provided with a pearl, stone, or monogram of smaller size. However, the tack type tie holder requires a piercing of the front surface and front layer of the tie, which after repeated wearing will spoil the tie, since evidently the needle will pierce diiferent parts of the tie whenever the same is put on.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages of the known tie holders, and to provide a safety pin for attaching a tie to a shirt or the like in such a manner that the tie holder is not visible although performing its intended function.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a safety pin for attaching two sheet materials to each other.
With these objects in view, one embodiment of the invention comprises clamping means for clamping one sheet material, such as the fabric of a shirt, and a pin piercing another sheet material, such as the rear layer of a tie.
Consequently, no part of the tie holder of the present invention engages the front surface of the front layer of the tie whereby the device is completely covered and hidden by the tie.
The novel features which are characteristic for the invention, are set forth in the appended claim. The invention itself and additional objects and advantages there of will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view, and FIG. 2 is a front view illustrating a tie holder or safety pin according to the invention on an enlarged scale.
3,059,298 Patented Oct. 23, 1962 "ice Referring now to the drawing, a clamping pin member 2 is mounted at one end of a clamping member 1 for turning movement about a pivot pin 20. Clamping pin member 2 has a holding portion 21 including a first part 24 located opposite a handle portion 19 which forms part of clamping member 1, and a second part 22 which curves toward the center portion of clamping member 1.
A curved pin portion 23 extends from part 22 and has a pointed end located opposite the other end of clamping member 1. A coil spring 3 surrounds pivot pin 20 and has end portions abutting parts 19 and 24 and urging the end of clamping member 1 and the pointed end of pin portion 23 toward each other. At the same time, part 22 is urged toward the center portion of clamping member 1.
Manual pressure on handle 19 and on the projecting part 24 separates clamping member 1 from part 22 so that the front panel of a shirt can be inserted between these parts, whereupon the rear layers of a tie may be pierced by the curved pin portion 23 at two points so that the point of pin portion 23 projects rearwardly out of the tie, and is located directly opposite clamping member 1.
When handle 19 is released, the shirt is clamped between clamping member 1 and clamping part 22, and clamping member 1 exerts pressure on the point of pin portion 23 so that the tie can not slip off the pin portion 23.
The clamping pin member 2 is rigid, and since its pointed end is located opposite clamping member 1, injury to the wearer is prevented.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a tie holder, it will be understood that it may be use-d as a safety pin.
The invention is not intended to be limited to the illustrated details, since modifications and structural changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
I claim:
A safety pin comprising an elongated clamping member; a clamping pin member including a holding portion turnably mounted on one end of said clamping member and having a first part projecting from said one end and a second part located opposite said clamping member, and a curved pin portion extending from said second part of said holding portion to the other end of said clamping member and having a pointed end located op posite said other end of said clamping member; resilient means connecting said one end of said clamping member with said holding portion to urge said second part against said clamping member and said pointed end against said other end of said clamping member; and a handle secured to said one end of said clamping member projecting from the same and located opposite said first part of said holding portion and adapted to be manually gripped together with said first part so that said members are turned to an open position, permitting the placing of a first sheet material between said second part and said clamping mem her and the piercing of two spaced points of another sheet material by said pin portion whereby said firstmentioned sheet material is clamped between said second part and said clamping member and said other sheet material is attached to said first-mentioned sheet material when said handle is released and said second part and said pointed end are urged by said resilient means toward said clamping member.
