Beit known that I, JAMEs M. AUBEEY, a citizen of the United States; residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful box for carrying pulleys, designed to isolate them from ice, Water, snow, and dirt Which may get into the tunnel in which the cable runs propelling or drawing t-he grip cars or carriages, and known as the cable car system,77 of which the following is a specification.
I attain these objects by t-he mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Prior to my invention the pulleys were uncovered and unprotected. Snow melting on the track, running into the tunnel, and freezing would stop the revolving of the pulleys; dirt accumulating would clog the action.
The adjustment of the pulley-box herein described, which can be easily done by bolting (N0 model.)
it to the frame which now supports the pulleys, will protect and `isolate them from any 4o accumulation of dirt and from freezing snow and Water in the tunnel, thereby saving the very great expense of running the cable coutinuall y in order to prevent the freezing of the pulleys and the destruction of pulleys caused 45 by the friction of the cable on them when starting, the pulleys being firmly held by the ice. This friction also causes great wear to the cable and extra strain on` the motive power, besides increasing greatly the lubricant re- 5o quired.
My invention Would-allow the cable to be stopped at any time for repairs, and during the night when it was not needed, Without any danger of the pulleys freezing. 5 5
The construction of this pulley-box also affords complete protection to the oil against sand or dirt, thus making a great saving in the amount of oil used, in the Wear of the journals and axles, and the labor required to attend to 6o the oiling.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A pulley-box, A, made of cast-iron or' metal or equivalent material, constructed with 6 5 a rim or bearing, D, to fasten the box to the frame which supports the pulley, substantiall as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a pulley-box, the combination and construction of the cover F, with aperture G, and 7o the oil-box E, all substantially as set forth.
