Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM VATTS, OF NEVARK, NET JERSEY.
HANGER AND BOX FOR SHAFTING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,549, dated October 30, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ILLIAM VATTS, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hangers and Boxes for Shatting; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a transverse section, and Fig. 3, a perpendicular section.
The saine letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
A, is the hanger.
B, is the box which may be constructed self oiling or in any other Way.
The sides of the hanger at the bottoni c, c, Figs. l, and 2, are made diagonal or fiaring toward the bottom and have a slot d, Fig. l, on each side through which and the box B, )asses the bolt e. This bolt is fast to the box, and is maintained or supported by the sliding caps f, f, and the bolts g, g, Figs. l, and 2. The box B, is free to turn on the bolts g, g, and may be adjusted to hang as in Figs. 2, and 3, or to stand as in Fig. l. The diagonal construction of the flanges c, c, with the sliding caps f, f, give when the box is hanging, as in Figs. 2, and 3, great additional strength to the support afforded to the box by the bolts g, g.
To adjust this box in a perpendicular direction either up or down it is necessary only to turn the nut-s on the bolts g, g and it may be adjusted in a lateral direction by unscrewing one and screwing up the other 0f' the nuts on the bolt e, either to the rightor left as may be required.
The advantages of my invention are, first, a less number of parts, with no fitting except that of the nuts to the bolts as the slots and holes in the lia-nger may be cast in good enough; second, the main support of the box, viz. the bolts g, g, take hold alongside of and close to it which is not the case with the ones in use; third, the arrangement of the parts is such that by simply turning the box over, the position of the hanger may be reversed and then instead of depending, bolted from a beam it may be bolted upright to the floor, an arrangement of great practical convenience.
I do not claim an open bottomed hanger or a self' oiling box, nor the combination of the two; but
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A box adjusted and supported in an open bottomed hanger, (said hanger having the flanges c, 0,) by means of the bolts g, g, the bolt e, and sliding caps f, f, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM VATTS.
