DRAUGHT EXCLUDING DEVICES FOR DOORS OR THE LIKE Filed July 14, 1959 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 'lill A Inventor FWGUS C. Hf/vE/QSOM A ttorne ys* United States Patent O 3,054,154 DRAUGHT EXCLUDING DEVICES FOR DOORS R THE LIKE Fergus C. Henderson, Sydenham, Keir St., Bridge of Allan, Scotland Filed July 14, 1959, Ser. No. 827,102 1 Claim. (Cl. 20--67) This invention relates to draught excluding devices for doors or the like.
According to the present invention I provide in a door or the like a draught excluding device comprising a draught excluding element and holder therefor having between its operative and inoperative positions a parallel swinging motion substantially in the plane of the door.
Further, according to the present invention I provide in or for a door or the like a draught excluding device comprising a mounting for attachment to the door at the lower end thereof, a draught excluding element and holder therefor carried by said mounting and adapted to have between its operative and inoperative positions a parallel swinging motion relative thereto substantially in the plane of the door when attached, and means for use in automatically effecting said motion on closing and opening of the door.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way o-f example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a draught excluding device according to the invention tted to a door, shown open,
FIGS. 2 and 3 .are rear views of the device in its inoperative and operative positions respectively,
FIG. 4 is an end view corresponding to FIG. 2,
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4 showing a detail,
FIG. 6 is a sectional plan of a door and doorway illustrating a further embodiment of the device, the door being open, and
FIG. 7 is a plan corresponding to FIG 6 showing the door closed.
Referring to the drawings, a draught excluding device 10 is itted to the front or outer face of an inwardly swinging door 11 at the lower end thereof as shown in FIG. 1, and consists of a cover or mounting 12, a draught excluding element or strip 13, a holder 14 for the strip 13 and leaf springs 15 connecting the holder 14 to the cover 12. The device extends the full length of the door parallel to the oor and is mounted in such a way that the strip holder 14 projects beyond the inner edge of the door. The cover 12 is of inverted L-shape in cross section and the vertical face of the horizontal flange abuts the face of the door 11. Holes 16 are provided for the insertion of screws for attaching the cover 12 to the door 11.
The leaf springs 15 lie in parallel and are secured at one end by screws 17 in a set of pre-marked holes 17A in the under-face of the horizontal ange of the cover 12 and at their other ends are similarly secured to the top face of the holder 14. The springs 15 urge the holder 14 and strip 13 upwards to an inoperative or raised position which it adopts when the door 11 is open.
The holder 14 is of rectangular section and length similar to that of cover 12, and has a groove located in its underface into which the draught excluding strip 13 is secured by adhesive or any other suitable means.
When the door 11 is closed, the screw 19 engages the plate 21 and is pushed inwards causing the holder 14 to swing downwards in -a parallel swinging motion until the strip 13 firmly engages the floor or iloor covering. When the door 11 is opened, the holder 14 and strip 13 return to their raised position under the action of the springs 15.
In a modification, not shown, the draught excluding device is fitted into a channel formed in the bottom end face of the door. In this case, the cover 12 is dispensed with, the upper ends of the springs 15 are secured to the roof of the channel, and the holder 14 is suitably guided in the channel.
When the device 10 is attached to the back or inside of an inwardly opening door 11, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, a plate 23 having upper and lower flanges is attached to the door jamb 22 in a recess therein, and said plate 23 carries a knee member or hinge 24, 25, 26. One leaf 24 of said hinge is at one end pivotally secured to a vertical pin 27 extending between said flanges, and the hinge is spring-urged to swing away from the plate 23. A second vertical pin 28 extends between said anges and is located between the hinge axis and the end of the free leaf 25 of the hinge. A projection 29 is provided on the free end of leaf 25. When the door 11 is open, FIG. 6, the hinge is partially closed so that the axis of knuckle 26 of the hinge is spaced outwards from the plate 23 and lies in the path of the inner end face of the door during closing of the latter. Thus, when the door is closed, FIG. 7, a stud 30 on the inner end face of the door engages the hinge knuckle 26 presses same inwards so that the hinge straightens against the pin 28 and the projection 29 at the free end of the hinge is pressed outwards towards the door and pushes the pin 19 inwards to move the draught excluder to its operative position in which it engages the floor and bridges the gap between same and the bottom of the door.
The mounting with its draught excluding strip and operating pin is reversible to meet the different requirements of doors, simply by opening the holder away from the cover, as shown in FIG. 5, removing screws 17 from the cover 12, reversing the holder 14 and rexing the springs 15 using a further set of pre-marked holes 17B.
Modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
The mounting and holder may be made of metal or plastics, and the device is also suitable for use with windows.
As a result of the invention there is provided an etcient draught excluding device which is completely hidden, silent in operation, of simple and inexpensive construction, easy to iit, and subject to little wear.
I claim:
On the back of a hinged door in a doorway, a draught excluding device comprising a mounting for attachment to the door `at the lower end thereof, a draught excluding element and holder therefor moveable between operative and inoperative positions with a parallel swinging motion relative to said mounting and substantially in the plane of the door when the device is attached thereto, and support means between said mounting and holder consisting solely of longitudinally interspaced parallel leaf springs attached at their ends to the mounting and holder and urging the holder and element to its inoperative position, in which means for automatically effecting movement of said holder and element to the operative position cornprises a plate attached to the door jarnb, and interhinged leaves pivotally connected at one end to said plate and folding away from the plate when the door is open so that, when the door is closed, the leaves are straightened thereby and the free end of the leaves engages and operates said holder and element.
