3,052,023 DISPOSABLE RAZOR WITH BLADE SPACING MEANS Isaac R. Meohas, 3703 Easy Ave., Long Beach, Calif. Filed May 23, 1960, Ser. No. 30,813 1 Claim. (Cl. 30-53) The present invention relates generally to the field of cutting devices, and more particularly to an improved disposable razor.
A major object of the present invention is to provide an improved disposable razor which, due to its low cost, may be discarded after a single use, as well as one that occupies a minimum of space when not in use, is simple in structure, requires no elaborate facilities for the manufacture thereof, and is ideally adapted to be sold and distributed through coin-operated machines.
Another object of the invention is to supply an improved disposable razor in which the blade thereof is situated at a fixed distance from the handle support, which blade location is so selected as to give optimum shaving results without the necessity of mechanical adjustment of the razor on the part of the user.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a disposable razor that is ideally adapted for use when traveling or away from home, and one in which the razor blade may be pressed against the surface being shaved with a desired uniform pressure contact, depending upon the angle at which the handle of the invention is bent.
Yet another object of the invention is to furnish an improved disposable razor that is particularly well adapted for use by women in removing hair from the legs.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred form thereof, and from the accompanying drawing illustrating that form, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of the disposable razor of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of the invention opposite that shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a transverse cross-sectional view of the razor taken on line 33 of FIGURE 1, showing the manner in which whiskers or hairs are cut from a surface with which the invention is brought into moving pressure contact;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the invention during an actual shaving operation, showing the manner in which the handle is curved to hold the blade in desired pressure contact with the surface to be shaved; and
FIGURE 5 is a top plan view of the razor shown in FIGURE 4 illustrating the manner in which the handle is bent to force the blade into a desired pressure contact with the surface to be shaved.
Referring now to the drawing for the general arrangement of the invention, it will be seen that the disposable razor includes an elongate handle A that is preferably formed from a polymerized resin material. A longitudinally extending spacing member B projects outwardly from one end portion of the handle A and supports an elongate razor blade C thereon. Due to the construction of the spacing member B, the blade C is spaced slightly outwardly from the side of handle A disposed adjacent thereto. The handle A and spacing member B are preferably fabricated from a thermoplastic resin, which when cured, is resilient along the longitudinal axis of the handle to permit it to be bent as shown in FIGURE 5.
The handle A is preferably formed from a sheet of cured thermoplastic resin and is defined by a first end portion 10, an intermediate portion 12 which is narrower than the first end portion, and a second end portion 14 of substantially the same width as the first portion 10.
IQQ
The first end portion 10 has two parallel edge portions 16 and 16' that taper inwardly toward the spacing member B, as may best be seen in FIGURE 3. Two longitudinally extending slots 18 and 18 are formed in end portion 10 that are parallel to edges 16 and 16' and spaced inwardly slightly therefrom as shown in FIGURE 2.
The spacing member B (FIGURE 3) comprises an elongate raised portion 20, preferably integrally formed with the first end portion 10, and extends longitudinally along this first end portion substantially the length of blade C. Raised portion 20 is substantially narrower than the width of blade C and has at least one longitudinally extending rib 22 projecting therefrom that is adapted to extend through a longitudinal slot 24 formed in the blade, as shown in FIGURE 1.
The rib 22 is also fabricated from a thermoplastic resin, and pressure is applied to that portion thereof projecting through the slot 24- to deform the same into the configuration 22a shown in FIGURE 3 in which the deformed portion 22a is wider than the slot 24 and serves to support blade C in a sandwiched manner between it and the outer face of the spacing member B.
From the standpoint of convenience, it has been found desirable to provide two longitudinally spaced ribs 22 which project through two appropriately spaced and aligned slots 24 formed in blade C (FIGURE 1). Blade C is rectangular in shape, and has two parallel, laterally spaced cutting edges 26 and 26 which taper toward one another. The width of blade C is such that the outer extremities of edges 26 and 26' are disposed slightly outwardly from the side walls of slots 18 and 18, as may best be seen in FIGURE 3. Blade C preferably extends substantially the length of end portion 10 as shown.
The invention is used in much the same manner as a straight-edged razor, with the exception that the handle A is preferably clasped at the second end portion 14 thereof. The end portion 14 of handle A is forcibly bent to lend it such angularity as to enable the user to hold the blade C against the surface 30 to be shaved with a desired pressure contact. As the razor is moved across the surface 30, hairs or whiskers 32 projecting therefrom are caught between the extremity of the blade edge 26' and the outer extremity of slot 18' adjacent thereto, with the edge 26' severing the whiskers or hairs which thereafter pass through slot 18' exteriorly of the razor. Due to the force exerted on handle A by means of the second end portion 14, the flesh of the user is depressed inwardly as shown in FIGURE 3, until the razor has passed there- 'over. It will be apparent from an examination of FIG- URE 2 that due to the structure of the invention, a close shave can be achieved by the use thereof, either when the device is used for shaving the face or for removing hair from the legs, or the like. It will be particularly noted that all severed hairs or whiskers pass through slot 18' to the exterior of the invention whereby they will not impede future operations. The edge 26 is available for use when the edge 26 becomes dull. However, either edges 25 or 26' may be used initially, but edge 26 is more convenient for those who are lefthanded.
Although the invention herein shown and described is fully capable of achieving the objects and providing the advantages hereinbefore mentioned, it is to be understood that it is merely illustrative of the presently preferred embodiment thereof, and I do not mean to limit myself to the details of construction shown and described, other than as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In an improved disposable r-azor that includes an elongate blade having a longitudinally extending slot formed therein, comprising: an elongate handle; a spacing member rigidly afixed to an end portion of said handle extending 4 along the length thereof; a longitudinally extending rib jacent a cut-ting edge of said blade through which hairs that projects outwardly from said spacing member through and-whiskers pass after'being severed by said blade. said slot for holding said blade in a fixed longitudinal position relative to said handle; and means on the exterior References cu d i the file of this patent end of said rib of greater Width than said slot for holda ing said blade on said rib and in abutting contact with 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS said spacing member, with said handle having at least one 1364,99 5 Frost June 2 1932 longitudinally extending slot formed therein disposed ad- 2,952,910 Meohas SEPL 2 19 9
