CARRYING CASE COVER FOR SEWING MACHINES 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 27, 1959 I27 INVENTORS Edward W Sfamon BY Kenneth Perkins W 7 ATTORNEY WITNESS United States Patent 3,050,899 CARRYING CASE COVER FOR SEWDIG MACHHNES Edward W. Stanton, Cranford, and Kenneth Perkins,
Scotch Plains, NJ., assignors to The Singer Manufacturing Company, Elizabeth, N..l., a corporation of New Jersey Filed Mar. 27, 1959, Ser. No. 802,413 4 Claims. (Cl. 4568.2)
This invention relates to sewing machine carrying cases of the type comprising two separate parts, viz., a base member and a cover member, the base member being arranged to support a sewing machine and the cover member being arranged preferably to rest on the base member and to cover the sewing machine, and this invention more particularly relates to molded or cast covers for such carrying cases.
Objects of the invention include providing, an improved molded or cast coverfor sewing machine carrying cases, and an improved sewing machine carrying case cover which will be light in weight, rigid in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices,
"ice
of the strip 121 and the covering 122, is apertured as at 123. Each end of the handle 30 is covered by a channel shaped metallic end cover 124 equipped with a depending threaded shank 126. The shank 126 passes through the aperture 123 in the handle 30 and through a hole 127 formed in the top wall 96. Beneath the top wall 96 and more specifically beneath the two cavities 98 and 99 as well as below the bottom of the wall portion which forms the depression 97, there extends a handle reinforcing bar or plate 128 formed of strip steel. Opposite ends of the bar 128 have elongated holes 129 adapted combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby, will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
FIG. 1 is an external perspective view of a sewing machine carrying case having a molded or cast cover embodying the present invention, dash-dash lines of FIG. 1 showing a sewing machine housed in the carrying case,
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view of the base member and a portion of the cover member of the carrying case shown in FIG. 1, the sewing machine being shown in elevation.
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view of the cover, per se, taken on the line 44 of FIG. 5,
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 4,
FIG. 6 is a bottom view of the cover, and
FIG. 7 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 77 of FIG. 4.
The sewing machine carrying case, shown in the drawings, includes a base member 16 and a molded or cast cover member 17. A rim 18 extends completely around the upper outer boundary of the base member 16 and this rim 18 receives the lower edge of the cover member 17. The base member 16 carries, at its opposite ends, a pair of keepers 19-19 held in place by a plate 21 and screws 22-22. When the cover member 17 rests on the rim 18 the keepers 19-19 may be engaged by a pair of latches 2323 secured to the cover member 17 by a plate 26 and screws 2727. The cover member has a pick-up handle 30 by use of which the carrying case can be picked up when the latches 23-43 engage the keepers 1919.
The cover member 17 has a front wall 91, an end wall 92, a rear wall 93, a second end wall 94 and a top wall 96, the top wall 96 being provided with the pick-up handle 30 previously mentioned. The top wall 96 is also provided with a depression 97 which facilitates grasping the handle 30 by the hand (not shown) of an operator. Opposite ends of the handle 30 are disposed in spaced cavities 98 and 99 which extend outwardly from the depression 97. The handle 30, per se, is constructed from a bowed steel strip 121 completely surrounded by a rubber like covering 122. Each end of the handle 30, and thus each end to accommodate the two shanks 126-426. Each shank 12 6 at a location below the bar 127 is provided with a lock washer and nut 132.
Inside the cover member 17 (FIGS. 4, 5 and 6) there are provided a plurality of reinforcing ribs 141, 142, 143,
144, 146 and 147. The ribs 141 and 142, which are interrupted by the cavities 98 and 99, are spaced and extend along the inside surface of the front wall 91, along the inside surface of the top wall 96, and along the inside surface of the rear wall 93. The ribs 143 and 144 are spaced and extend along the inside surface of the left end wall 92, along the inside surface of the top wall 96 and each makes a T-joint or connection with the rib 141. The ribs 146 and 147 are spaced and extend along the inside surface of the right end wall 94, along the inside surface of the top wall 96 and each makes a T-joint with the rib 142.
The subject carrying case is used in the following manner. When it becomes desirable to transport a sewing machine 64 in the carrying case, the cover member 17 is placed over the sewing machine 64 and on top of the base member 16 in such a manner that the lower edge of the cover member 17 rests on the rim 18. When this is accomplished, the latches 23-23 are closed and the carrying case 16-17 and sewing machine 64 are picked up as a unit by use of the handle 30.
Having thus disclosed the nature of the invention, what we claim herein is:
1. A molded or cast cover for a sewing machine carrying case, said cover comprising a front wall, a back wall, two end walls and a top wall, said top wall being provided with cavities formed in portions of said top wall and each of said cavities communicating with a hole passing through said top Wall; a handle having apertured ends disposed in said cavities; a channel shaped end cover positioned on top of each end of said handle; a shank member secured to each of said end covers and said shank members passing through the apertured ends of said handle, and through said holes in said top wall; means for securing said shank members to said top wall; and a pair of spaced reinforcing ribs extending along the inside surface of said front wall, along the inside surface of said top wall and along the inside surface of said back wall, said pair of reinforcing ribs being interrupted by the portions of said top wall which form the said cavities.
2.
