Description
FRANCIS ARNOLD, OF MIDDLE HADIJAM, CONNEG'IICUT.
CLOTHES-SQUEEZER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,451, dated October 23, 1'86'0.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANcIs ARNOLD, of Middle I-Iaddam, county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squeezing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the fol* lowing specification and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use said improvement I will proceed t0 describe its construction and referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement consist-s in the use, or employment of all or nearly all old device, differently combined and arranged to produce the same result in a cheaper and better way, first, in the construc tion of the india rubber rollers, having a central division in the aperture through which the shaft passes, and is secured, so as to receive a correspondingly shaped and slitted shaft; second, in making the frame work in which the rollers are secured oscillating, so as to form a trough, or an inclination of the box in said frame to conduct the suds or water, in either direction from the rollers, as may be desirable.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, shows a side view. Fig. 2, shows an edge view. Fig. 3, shows a sect-ion of the mode of changing and fastening the oscillating frame in which the rollers are secured. Fig. 4, shows the slitted shaft, and india rubber roller, in end section.
A, is the bed-piece of a bench or form, on which my machine may be secured in such a manner as to be quickly removed when not desired to remain thereon and upon which may be placed a tub, or box, (either one or both sides of the machine) and from which the clothes are taken to the rollers, or into which the suds or water runs from the clothes or rollers during the squeezing process.
B, are studs or supports secured to the bed-piece A, to receive and hold the oscillating-frame work C, which is made in a proper manner to receive the squeezing roll ers and their appendants for holding and adjusting them (the rollers) for use, and are secured to the studs by means of pins or bolts D. Said oscillating frame is provided with a proj ect-ing arm E, by means of which (the drip box F secured within said frame work C) it is thrown with its drip boX F, rollers, &c., into an inclination from a perpendicular position, so as to cause the suds or water to run in either direction, right or left from the machine, as may be desirable and is held firmly in such position while in use, and is easily and quickly released therefrom when desirable by means of a sliding key G.
H, are the india-rubber rollers secured upon the shafts I. The apertures in the rollers are made with a central division I', substantially such as shown at I', Fig. 4, and the shafts I, are also made, having a central slit J corresponding thereto, so as to lill the apertures of the rubber rollers, whereby I am enabled to effectually secure the rollers upon the shafts without the use of nails, or screws (which heretofore have torn the rollers and injured the clot-hes). I also fit a piece of the same kind of material as that of which the shaft I, is made into the slit in the end of the shaft, and secure it thereto (after the rubber roll is put onto its place on the shaft) to form afull bearing on the end of the shaft.
K, is the means by which the machine is operated.
Now it will be seen that this machine can be readily secured to any form, or bench, ordinarily used for a wash bench, and may be quickly removed when not wanted for use, the manner of operating it being the samel as those now in use.
I believe I have described the nature and construction of my improvement, and the advantage to be derived therefrom, so as to enable a mechanic skilled to make and use the same.
I do not claim the device, as shown and described in the patents of S. A. Bailey, April 5th, 1859, and March 12th, 1860.
What I claim therefore and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Making the india rubber roller H, with ioo a central division I, in its aperture I, to In testimony whereof I have hereunto set receive a corresponding slitted shaft I submy hand and aiXed my seal this 2nd day stantially as and for the purpose described. of April7 1860.
2. The combination of the oscillating FRANCIS ARNOLD. [nsf] 5 frame C, rollers H, studs B, arranged and Witnesses:
operating substantially in the manner as and L. K. SELDEN,
for the purpose described.
ELIAS SELDEN.
